no one can seem to solve overheating problem
My car has been over heating since August, and no one that I have brought it to seems to know how to get to the real root of the problem. Back in August, I took my car to a mechanic recommended by my co-worker. He replaced the water pump and the timing belt, but this did not fix my over heating problem. I brought it back to him 7 days later -because it started to get hot, he had the car for a day, and told me nothing is wrong that he could see (he said he did some "tests"). the following day, I drove the car away from his shop and literally 15 mins later it starts to overheat. He basically says then it has to be the gasket because he checked everything else. He told me he had done a pressure and compression test, and none of those things indicated blown head gasket. I lost confidence in that guy, so I took it my moms mechanic. He test drove the car, but it did not overheat, so he said there was nothing wrong. I drove the car for a few days and it still got hot.
I finally decide to call my Uncle who I hadn't been in contact with much. Anyways, he finds a leak in one of the hoses, and apparently the gasket around the thermostat had also been torn, but someone put some sort of sealant around it, and put it back instead of replacing both things. Long story short, I have replaced the water pump, timing belt, radiator, radiator cap, and thermo stat, but my car is still over heating. I also bled the system out following my Uncle's instructions.
Prior to all these repairs, it had been overheating even while driving on the freeway. Now, it just overheats while I am in traffic and at idle, but once I start moving somewhat fast, the needle drop down to a little under the middle. My Uncle now thinks it could be the sensor. Here is my problem, I have spent 900+ without any resolution. My Uncle doesn't think it is a gasket, and so did the other two mechanics, but honestly, what else could it be?
From what I have read online, a head gasket problem doesn't necessarily have to show classic symptoms. Here is the thing, I had the car a whole two weeks, and it did not get hot, and then just the other day I am one the street and the needle starts to rise. One last thing, even after all of these services, the needle doesn't sit quite under the thermostat symbol like it use to before I had all of these problems. Any advice? Ideas? I am scared to put anymore money toward this car, and still have this problem.
By the way, my car is a 99 Honda civic with 182,900 miles on it.

Re: no one can seem to solve overheating problem
1) Your radiator may be blocked up.
2) Radiator fan may not be working properly
3) May have blown head gasket: Do a Block Test. Are you losing coolant in the radiator and gaining coolant in the reservoir daily or every few days?
4) Check all coolant and heater hoses for leaks
A pressure and compression test does not rule out a blown head gasket. From the intermittent nature of the issue it sounds like the fan isn't always coming on like it should..maybe loose connection. Check the ECT connections: https://honda-tech.com/honda-civic-d...tions-2571707/
Radiator fan testing:
The more you can do mechanically, diagnostically..the better off you'll be. You have an older car and it's going to need attention more often than a newer one. There's several Civic forum sites and most, if not all issues have been covered.
