Somewhat Random Bogging
Posting this for a friend.
Situation: Bogging occurs around 2-3k RPM's and is most easily repeated by running it hard then driving slow again. When trying to launch the car holds RPM's good until the transmission is engaged and even holding throttle at same percentage it bogs. Has nothing to do with a bad driver, this is purely mechanical.
He does have a VAFC, which came with the car which was just purchased. It randomly runs rough in idle. It will bounce between 600-1000 RPM's on random occassions. The IN/OUT sensor settings were on 6-6 which this was happening. I tried messing with them and found that the best idle is achieved at 4-6. It idles around 740-770 RPM with the new setting. Haven't noticed any other difference around the power band with this setting.
One thing I'm suspicious of is his catalytic. He has a rattle at 2400-2700 RPM's, and this just so happens to be around where he bogs. The rattle is definitely coming from the catalytic. I do no believe it's the heatshield. The heatshield is on there very firm (about 6 bolts) and doesn't rattle no matter how hard we hit it with something. I'm led to believe that since the car bogs around ~2500 and the catalytic rattles at ~2500 that he has a bad catalytic.
Let me know what you think about this. If you have any questions please feel free to ask away.
