New seat belt retractors?
Anybody ever get new seat belt retractors in an EG? I am sooo tired of how they do not retract at all and every time I get out of the car, I have to keep helping it retract because if not it will just hang there. I feel like this little part would make me feel like my car is newer and nicer =P

Have you contacted honda? Sometimes they will warrenty the seatbelts for life.... I say sometimes becuase I have heard of dealers turning some cars down.
Or just get a new seat belt from a junk yard or something.

Clean the portion of the seat belt holder that the seat belt goes through before going down into the panel(s). It'll help them slide a little bit better when you clean off the dirt. You'll be surprised to see how dirty they can get!

I've heard about this many many times, very few are turned away...so if you complain enough I'm sure you can get them replaced OR just go to another dealership, or call dealerships decently nearby. Free stuff is worth the drive.

I'll try going to my local Honda dealership this week. Free stuff is definitely worth the drive. I hope they can replace them! That would be sweet

Post your results...I've been wanting to do mine but I guess I'm waiting for a direct personal experience recently to get the push to do it. Everyone used to talk about it...let me know if honda still holds this warranty.

If you do an interior swap, and go from grey seat belts to black to match the interior, would Honda still warranty them? Or would they know?
I swapped the front seatbelts in my hatch because A) mine were funky, and B) to match the seats better that were swapped in.

Chances are no, noramlly that would be considered tampering with them. In that case, they would not honor it.
Unless they dont find out, some dealers are smart about things such as that, some arent, or just dont care. They will likely find out, becuase the numbers wont match, with what had orginaly came in your car.
The only way to be certain is to ask them.

Re: New seat belt retractors?
There's a guy with an '91 Civic who posted in the Olympia/Lacey/Tumwater thread in the Northwest section who says Honda has refused to replace his belts since he has Si seats in his DX/STD hatch.
I won't claim to know the whole story there.
Eran, a few years back, when he had stock seats in his hatch and all, he brought the car into Honda and they replaced his driver seatbelt free of charge iirc.

Re: New seat belt retractors?
The lady at the dealership told me I would have to wait over an hour to have the seat belts "diagnosed" and they will replace if they find out it is defective due to age and will be covered under the warranty. I didn't do it because she said if they find out it is due to user misuse, you will have to pay $90 for the diagnosis and then pay more on top of that if you still want them replaced. She made me worried that they would say something about the warranty not covering it and I didn't feel like paying $90 for nothing..
Not sure if I want to go back soon and do it or not. The main reason I was thinking that might make them say it won't be covered under the warranty is that my seat belts are pretty good at retracting when you pull it out really far (but I think everyones is good when it comes to that), its just the last 6 inches or so that I have to help it retract.

Try a differnet dealer. Did you describe what it was doing?
Unfortunetly, I am not suprised, about the $90 fee.
Personaly I would just look for another seat belt from another car.
Did you happen to ask how much the part to fix it would be?

Check HondaPartsDeals.com for ideas on prices. If your belts are still available (the site will list them even if you can no longer get them), they'll likely be pricey.

Yeah, I bet they will be expensive.
I tried to explain what the belts were doing and if she could let me know if they would say that its under warranty coverage. If it is, you don't have to pay $90 and they replace them..

Re: New seat belt retractors?
Yeah try another dealership...some are extremely helpful...that one doesn't seem so.
I plan on trying this out...I have teg seats though, hopefully that won't be looked at as a fault in warranty. I don't see how that would make much difference, as the seat replacement has NOTHING to do with the belt retraction device. Oh well...we will see how it goes I'll post results on here.

Re: New seat belt retractors?
Well, I know they were not misused by me. But I am the third or so owner of the car..
The thing is, I feel like mine are still considered "safe". In your 91 Civic, did the retraction still work good when you pulled out a lot of seat belt and not work too well/slow when you get to the last 6 or so inches left? Mine basically does that, so I am afraid they won't replace them and make me pay $90 because they still "work" technically. I don't know.. I might just go there tomorrow and go for it

Re: New seat belt retractors?
The front seats, the clasp that's mounted on the seat, have sensors to say the belts are on. The rear seats and pillar mounted section of the front are mechanical. At least that's what I remember from parting out a '98 Civic.
There's a wire under the front seats where it plugs into the floor harness though.

Re: New seat belt retractors?
Pardon my idiot mistake. I was confusing my 91 Civic's automatic front seat (shoulder to be exact) belts with yours. My 91 Civic LX's were driven electrically when one opens or closes the door etc. Wrong-o for your generation of Civic. I deleted my posts.

Re: New seat belt retractors?
Well, got them. Got the parts ordered free of charge and when they come in they are going to install them free of charge. So if you get a nice person, they can make it happen.
