nerdsports DIY catch can...
I am still in awe of how well (member) nerdsports made (and created idea) catch can out of a/c filter. When I'm done with my swap a/c is going so this is exactly what I'm going to make, however I've seen many setups with catch cans, and still have a few questions that search could not help me with, or couldn't find; since their are TOO many pages to read though.
Okay, these are the setups I've seen, I don't understand what some people are thinking, but now I'm totaly confused...
1. hose from valve cover to catch can, hose to PCV valve to catch can.
2. hose from valve cover to catch can, hose from catch can to intake pipe hole. (Where is the PCV flow from this one?)
3. hose from PCV valve to catch can, catch can to intake pipe hole. (Now, this setup would defeat the purpose of a catch can right?)
4. The picture setup of course which seems the right way... This should be the only way correct!?
Please help me, either I think to hard on something very simple, or I'm a dumbass.
Here the pic. (Cleanest engine bay I've ever seen BTW!)
(Don't delete, I want this in civic tech since this is only pertaining to civic setups.) TIA

in my case its alittle from column A and alitle from column B... ive been wondering the same thing about the connections for the catch-can too. every post i see about it has a different set-up it seems. sorry i cant help but i will be checking up on this post to get a few answers on this topic myself.

ok, good artical, but i am still confused about one thing.... i now realise the catchcan goes between the PCV and intake manifold to trap unwanted oil, but this leaves the hose going from the valve cover to the intake arm untouched and now oil will be coming from there, wouldnt you want 2 catch cans one for each tube(or somehow combine both all 4 hoses into one can)?
and also who makes baffled cans, i dont think the cusco or greddy are baffled and there was one post on that thred that said steel wool will come loose over time and end up in your combustion chamber which makes perfect sense, so i dont want to diy baffle.

i think the best setup would be one catch can with an inlet hole and an outlet hole and a drain valve at the bottom... you would need 2 fittings for it, one for each hole, but the fittings would each have 2 nossles. you would attach both the PCV line and the valve cover line to the intake hole nossles... then attach the line going to the intake arm and the other line for the intake manifold to the outlet hole on the can. this way both the intake lines will be creating vacum for both the valve cover vent and the PCV vent, but all the oil would be emtying into the same can.
EDIT: but then how would an oil return line work?, on a normal catch can set up like you posted above, where would you mount the oil return line and how would it return the oil to the valve cover?

Look for the Endyn/Moroso catchcan setup, it's expensive, but it drains back into the engine without you having to do it manually..
try http://www.theoldone.com I think they sell it there still...

Re: nerdsports DIY catch can... (euclid)
thanks w00t! for the support and stuff. this idea came up while doing an engine swap on a friends car..... seeing all the oil inside the intake manifold motivated me to make this. however, one small mistake, it is not baffled. when i cut it open, there was some wool pad looking material inside, i simply removed it all and got it welded shut with nothing inside.
as for how its connected, its supposed to go from the pcv to the intake manifold. however, people have put them between the valve cover and intake pipe. i dont see the 2nd one so useful... the pcv vents the crankcase and theres oil spitting up and all around, so oil is sucked into the manifold... lots of it. after 2-3 weeks of having the catchcan on my car, i drained it and had about 1/3 of the can with oil.... ENGINE OIL!!! this thing is awesome!! helps ur engine b/c all of that engine oil wont mix with ur fuel to screw up the octane of the fuel and the spark adn what not..... im pulling most of this outta my head... just theory and im thinking its all true!
i'll post more pics later.....

Re: nerdsports DIY catch can... (SlowCivicHmm)
i believe u can use it without having to open it up... it'll be baffled already. all u'll need to do is make a drain on hte bottom.....

sweet.....
what do you mean by baffled??? is that okay....will it drain if I drill a hole at the bottom and stick a bolt through it??

Re: nerdsports DIY catch can... (SlowCivicHmm)
when its baffled, it doesnt allow the oil inside to splash around possibly enter the "SUCKING" line... the inlet (blows oil in) and the outlet (sucks air, not OIL out).
to make a drain u can use a bolt like u mentioned, or at home depot pick up a lil valve that u can screw into the hole u drill and simply open it to drain and close it the rest of the time...

Sweet, thanks for clarifying nerdsports.
If your even lazy enough you can just empty every month bu removing tubes and turning up-side down. Well, maybe with all the crap in their some of the oil might not come out.
Another corcern I have is, oil vapors run though valve cover to intake pipe, then they run though intake manifold then burned. These vapors can't be a good conbustion either, just good emissions. Would having breathers on either end help this? I know this is dissucced some where here!?

Re: nerdsports DIY catch can... (euclid)
im not sure about the whole baffling thing. greddy, cusco arent baffled. not sure which brands are!!! but they say its better... (w/e) hehe. but yea the greddy catch can brings instructions to mount it between the valve cover and intake pipe. but thats not the MAIN purpose of it. u can maybe do some sort of can with 4 ports. 2 ins and 2 outs and have both PCV and valve cover breather thingy on it. just a thought. i wonder how much oil the valve cover to intake can would catch in a month????? euclid, give us some info if u try it....
and w00t! i emptied it once so far and i had to remove the hoses and turn it upside down... its not for lazy people. lol im going to put a lil valve on hte bottom it'll be easier... and if it still has all hte stuff inside (stock unopened) then its better to have the drain on the bottom, all the oil will sit there, so it should come out easier than having to go back up through the "filters" or w/e to come out the top..... get me?

Right, good stuff nerdsports.
(Next DIY SlowCivicHmm, I want to learn to bypass coolent to intake manifold; rough idle, but lower intake temps.)

Re: nerdsports DIY catch can... (integra6650)
an outlet on the bottom? wtf. if the outlet is on the bottom, then it's gonna throw the oil that comes in back into the intake manifold!! depends where u mean by BOTTOM. post a picture of it....
