Need advice on JDM engine replacement of D16Y7 in 98 Civic LX
As the subject title states,,,,,
Oh, I've searched, searched searched... But basically I think I've figured it out.
I have a 98 LX with the 1.6L SOHC ODB2 Non-VTEC engine, D167Y engine... Well been having a bad time with it last year had it pulled and went to a "Reputable" machine shop so I had a fresh motor to turn over to my son when he goes to college... I'm the original owner, had the tranny rebuilt, struts, new rims, tires, radiator, A/C compressor, fan, evap, condensor, struts, and had the engine rebuilt...
Engine rebuild seemed fine but 10 months later, head gasket blew, 1st bad sign. Then found original head bolts were re-used in the build. Then found after having that fixed I was still passing emmisions into the coolant system...
I;ve now pulled this thing out myself 3 times since the engine rebuild.... So I'm pretty sure there must be a crack in the block/head or what.... but basically sunk enough $$ this thing...
So,,, Looking at JDM engine replacements. For a SOHC Non-VTEC (keeping it non VTEC and simple swap) engine...
Do I go with the D16A ZC Is that the JDM engine best recommended? I see some doing a D15B but I think that's VTEC...
Also HMOTORS.com seems to be reputable, any other recommendations?
Thanks All in advance!!!

Re: D167y JDM replacment help for 98 LX SOHC NON VTEC
why not another y7 they're a dime a dozen where as ppl always over charge for "JDM" engines, or even a y8 and just don't bother wiring up vtec same deal as the y7 then.

if you go with the jdm d16y engine, your gonna have to do the ckf bypass unless your gonna swap out the oil pump. http://technet.ff-squad.com/ckftrick.htm
it would probably be easier to just find a usdm d16y7, they are just as cheap

No, since both motors are out just swap the oil pump and be done with. You're gonna have to do the timing belt and water pump job anyways.

Why not another D16y7? Why should I...
If I can get another 10 hp and it's not a huge deal, why not? I'm already having to pull the motor....
This is a full engine swap not just short block....
Does anyone know if it's the D16aZC I should be hunting? I'm going to stay Non-Vtech.... Not worth it.

Pretty sure that's not an issue as long as I'm staying withing the ODB2 SOHC Non-VTEC specs and swapping out the entire longblock.

Get the D15b non-VTEC. I have that exact engine in my hatch. You'll have to do the CKF trick to get the CELs from popping (mentioned in post #3). Also the engine came with the weirdest looking distributor. But it was clean. And really, you won't feel any difference with that "extra" 10 horsepower.

among the non-vtec d-series you won't feel 10-15 hp heck between the d15 and d16 non-vtec d's is there even a 10 hp discrepancy ?. same goes for torque not enough to feel

ooookay, +1000 Torque is your best friend, gets you to the horsepower...
So, Any recommendations on a dealer of D16Y or D16ZC ODB2 SOHC 96-00 engines? Any experiences?

You should check the date on those posts, tigerjdm has up there status. Not to mention you have a warranty on the engine so as long as you get it up and running in time before warranty runs out your golden. I've personally ordered 3 different motors and had all maintenance done to them, made sure oil reach the head before actually running the motor and all has not failed. These motors came clean and well packed but I would advise to to look over the pallet and make sure nothing is damage before signing off the driver. Yeah those cars are still running strong to this day.

So basically they've changed their ways... Cool. Cause at $200.00 to ship it back if there's a problem makes me very leary to pull the trigger....
Thanks.

Than I suggest you find someone local. Because it doesn't matter which online source, if theres a problem its gonna cost you 200 bucks to ship back.

Your right, I don't have Xray vision. I've exhausted a lot of resources trying to find someone local. Most a pulled from wrecks and high mileage.

I hear stories from other online sources as well but it comes down to the time you put it in, did you follow through with what the requirements were for warranty coverage ( that varies from site to site ), and did you also inspect the pallet for any signs of damage before signing off. I know for tiger jdm they require certain maintenance parts to be changed out and you have a certain amount of days to claim warranty. Most importantly did the person receiving the pallet do an inspection, thats necessary because you can claim it and go from there, have it on record. Last but not least you better have a good credit card company and not be using paypal. AMEX has my back no matter what and I never had to pay for shipping it back, but than again I never had a bad motor shipped.

Re: Need advice on JDM engine replacement of D16Y7 in 98 Civic LX
Well I pulled the trigger on an engine from JDM Engines Corp, Clifton N.J. Got it for $595.00 plus the $225.00 in shipping... They sent me what they say are the actual pics, it has a 90 day warranty and it's on it's way via Freight. Called them up and I also got some decent recommendations on it...
Having dropped at my friends shop and he knows not to accept the pallet unless it's in good shape...
I did pick up the CZ 1.6L Non VTEC SOHC.. I'll post when it get's here. First things first....
Compression test, bottom end inspection, timing belt, water pump and any gaskets etc.... After this last engine I could do with some luck maybe a prayer or two....

Intake manifold, exhaust manifold, alternator, injectors, fuel rail, throttle body, longblock and 90 day warranty. Most I've seen are 30 day
It shipped yesterday..... And it's not USDM it is JDM has the ZC on the engine block.. If it's what was in the picture....
