my first h-t project. ls-vtec build!
So, this is about my 5th honda build, and i have decided to finally make an account on this site and post the progress of my car. Firstly, I will start with explaining how i came across this project. i had a spraypainted vx hatch that was a pretty crappy shell but I had a 99spec Civic Type R motor in it with a LSD b16 tranny, other than that and a bunch of suspension mods, the car wasnt very clean and had a lot of broken crap and even with all the camber kits and toe kits it would never align right and just blow through tires.
A guy offered to trade me his clean title ej1 with an ls vtec swap. I pretty much jumped on the offer because of how much cleaner it was than my car, and I either wanted to do a ls-v or b20-v with a type r head anyway. but i would rather have a cleaner shell and then upgrade my valvetrain later on with some tuner 2's or something so i traded.
this is what i used to have with the ctr motor
this is basically how i got the car.
cf hood
rota slips
gsr leather interior
b18b1 stock bottom end
99 b16a2 stock head
golden eagle conversion kit
tokico blues on no name coils
Overall the car was very very clean and we were both happy with our trade, so first things first I flushed tranny, coolant, and oil, and replaced all fluids. I noticed a decent oil leak coming from the head gasket location, and the clutch was going out a little bit, which didnt bug me much because I would have upgraded clutches anyway, and I planned on rebuilding the bottom and and would need a new head gasket anyway. later that week I realized how bad the oil leak really was and decided I needed to do a new head gasket before I did anything else.
This was quite the headache. This is about my 3rd head gasket replacement so I came into the job with optimism. I was surely mistaken. Everything was going as planned and the head came off easily and without any headaches which was nice. I took the head to a nearby machine shop to make sure it was square and everything checked out nicely other than a small amount of oil buildup in cylinder 2. Once again not too worried because I planned on rebuilding the bottom end and head. I then head home and begin to clean off the head and deck of the block to prepare to put the new gasket on, and this is when all the fun begins... I realized that the dowel pins were not in the holes in the block, and I knew they werent in the head when i removed it, so basically whoever put the motor together didnt use dowel pins... awesome. luckily I had some ls dowels, drilled the b16 head and threw the head on the block. I then begin to tighten down the head bolts and realize that the previous owners used ls head bolts... WTF!!! So I virtually was missing two head bolts, had no dowel pins, and they used the wrong head gasket as well....The replacement took me about 7 hours because of all the different headaches and trips to the machine shop and hardware store for drill bits and other stupid misc crap. but the job was finally done and it didnt leak oil anymore so I was happy.
I drove the car how it was for a while longer and ended up doing camber kits and aligning all the tires and luckily lined up very nicely! so that was nice. I also replaced the windshield and did some other small maintenance stuff. And finally felt like the car was reliable enough to begin purchasing some upgrades.
I noticed that the top of the valve cover was hitting the bottom of the hood and i have no room to lower the motor using spacers on the mounts so I bought some QSD billet aluminum hood spacers from an h2b kit for a really good deal lol. I personally hate hood spacers so I needed to have nice ones to make myself feel better about it haha. I also got a set of konig candy's 15x7.5 with a +30 offset for my slips and $150 cash, which is a steal considering the tires on the slips were trash and the konigs has minty fresh new tires.
QSD hood spacers. fixed the issue with clearance.
new stance, very happy with the fitment, barely had to roll my fenders.
I also just got my 6 puck F1 clutch to throw in it. I know a lot of people hate F1 clutches but I have never had a problem with them and this purchase is like my 3rd one so I said why not. The clutch arrived today and I plan on putting it on along with swapping my tranny (ls) for a b16 in the process. I will be posting pics on Wednesday of the replacement
future upgrades I plan to do:
new p30 pistons with new rings
arp rod bolts
resize rods
shotpeen rods
shave head
1 ply head gasket
color matched honda rod bearings
bore to 81.5mm
retune
blox b cams or ctr
mild hand port on head
supertech valve stem seals
some type of new valve spring (not sure what i wanna run yet)
Im only a couple paychecks away from the total rebuild. I will be starting with the bottom end and when that is rebuilt with the b16 pistons and new rings and bearings i will pull some power out of it with cams and springs. my goal is to have a reliable ls-v making 200wheel? lemme know what you guys think! I will try and update this as much as possible. Any feedback helps from more experienced ls-v runners this is my first one!

well im not building either car for you. i personally like coupes better, and oem paint for that matter, and working gauges, heater, etc. and i wanted to do ls-v anyway. it has nothing to do with reliability. neither of the two cars ever broke down on me. also the rings were going out on the ctr. this ls-v motor compression tested at 200psi across the board.

I personally would have kept the hatch. After the headache my friend went through with his LS/Vtec I wouldn't even mess with one.

yeah i have heard bad things about ls-v's but i know if i take my time and do **** right it will be reliable and fast. and its new territory for me and i wanted to learn how to do it. if i end up not liking it i will just sell the swap for some srkilla and buy a gsr swap, but for now, this car has NO problems, so maybe im the lucky one out of the bunch? lol

Re: my first h-t project. ls-vtec build!
Been a while since I updated this and a lot has changed, so firstly, the lsvtec is no longer. I got an offer from a friend of a friend on a semi built b20 in trade. The kid who had the motor is notorious for making terrible car trades so this was nice to come up on
list of mods for the b20 include:
arp rod bolts
arp head studs
1-ply mls head gasket
head decked
hand port job on head
ebay $100 adjustable cam gears
crower 403s
supertech valvesprings
supertech valvestem seals
kevlar blue timing belt
b16 intake mani
omni power throttle body
8lb flywheel
clutchmasters stage 3 clutch
Keep in mind i got this in a straight across trade for a bone stock ls-v with golden eagle conversion kit...
This motor ran 12.5 in a 1850lbs crx at 107 so i estimated whp at around 180-190 so I feel like its a pretty good come up.
I havent really decided if I want to continue building the motor or leave it how it sits. something that I did think about was making a b20v. I would be able to do it with hardly any money by just selling the head. but as of now im pretty happy with no vtec and just plan to get a good tune and throw a good header on it.
here are some pics of the swap process
motor pulled
bout to swap trannys
dirty bay, time to clean!
sat like this overnight up nice and early the next day
new motor!
