Default My abused but still bad-*** Honda Battery

when I bought my civic 3 yrs ago it came w/ a "honda" battery, not sure how long it had been in there but the guy saved receipts for everything and there were none for the battery. (the no's on the battery sticker were not stamped out to show the date) Well my car not having a buzzer I have killed my battery at least 12+ times between leaving the headlights, fogs, and dome light on over the last 3 yrs. Well about a month ago, I had a pulley incident about 20+ miles from my house and had to drive the car home on just the battery (no alternator) about a mile from my house all the gauges died so I must have JUST made it. sure enough I shut the car off in my driveway and it wouldnt start cause the battery was toasted. Well it sat for about 3 weeks like that and after I fixed the other problems I jumped it, let it idle for a few min and drove it for an hour- ran fine even though the "eye: in the battery was still black instead of green. now the car starts no problem at all and 2 weeks later the eye of the battery has even turned back to green . props to honda for the bad-*** battery!
But lately when I get done driving or stop at a light i am smelling a wierd smell, from the battery area of the engine bay. it smells a little like when you burn something plastic... but not too strong. The car runs great & the "eye" thingy is still green, any ideas on what this smell could mean? it is definitely coming from the general area where the battery is, I just hope it is not going to explode or anything.
thanks

Have you double-checked all of that other work that you did? Check your wiring harness and connections. Make sure that you have the correct fuses in place. Otherwise, I don't know... I hope nothing is slowly frying on you.

Your battery shouldn't explode so long as you don't short it out with a fat bar or something.....but everytime you discharge a lead acid battery like yours both the negative and positive plate become covered in lead sulphate. The more discharged the battery becomes the more lead sulphate forms. When you charge the battery essentialy the lead sulphate is broken down and you get one plate lead, one plate lead oxide. Problems occur when you completely discharge the battery and large crystals of lead sulphate form, these are not broken back down during charging either because they are too stable or break away from the plate. If you leave the battery flat for ages the crystals also become more stable and cannot be broken down during recharge. Everytime the battery is discharged completley you get more and more lead sulphate crystals roaming around between the plates. These can cause the plates to buckle due to their size and can result in positive and negative plates touching. This results in a short circuit - you could be experiencing this in a mild form which could get worse. Try measuring the voltage of your battery. Fully charged lead acid cells are about 2.18volts ---> your battery should read roughly 13 volts when brand new and fully charged. If it reads above 12 then the condition isn't that bad but anything under 12 when fully charged means it is shot. Also just because it reads 13v doesn't mean its still good- it may have a reduced plate surface area resulting in a higher internal resistance. This basically means its voltage will drop more under heavy load, ie when you start it. No lead acid battery will last for every, especially car batteries since they are not designed for deep cycles. Personally i'd call it a day and get a new one...
