Default My 94 samba green del sol SI

It has been a few years since I have been on here with me selling my boosted integra back in 2013 but like many of us, We always come back lol. I had been looking for a commuter car to get to work and back for some time and finally came across this diamond in the rough in the local ad section on facebook, A 1994 samba green del sol SI with 212,000 miles. It is 100% stock minus the stupid head and tail lights that It came with it when I bought it (those are going bye bye) and runs/drives great for the age. The factory a/c still blows cold and the cruise control still works (both big pluses due to the highway driving I will be doing).

It Is originally from Michigan so she does have her fair share of cancer unfortunately that I think can be repaired or at least be made more presentable. The left quarter is by far the worst spot. It looks like someone used spray foam and then ran wood screws through that to hold the bumper in place, It failed. I have spent the last 24hrs trying to source patch panels and they are impossible to come by with out spending a fortune. So with that being said I guess this will be a semi restoration thread. My father has a body shop so I have access to everything needed to make panels and not use excessive body filler (hopefully).

pros
-stock
-runs great and shifts smooth
-a/c has been converted to new type of Freon and blows ice cold.
-interior is untouched, no broken cracked or painted panels aside from the usual arm rest on the drivers door.
-new stock exhaust
-no engine lights on.
-does not burn oil or excessive amounts of oil.

cons
-has rust, quite a bit but I have been down this road before with my old crx and integra.
-some of the rust has been repaired poorly before so I might find surprises
-seems like the clutch slips a bit if you are really getting on it.
-Can not control the passenger window from the driver side

Goals
-keep a classic out of the scrap yard
-reliability is key, I will be driving about 60 miles round trip daily so maintenance is going to be a main concern.
-My days heavily modifying Hondas are over or so I hope haha. I would like to think I can get this back into a good looking original little cruiser.

I am new to del sols and am happy to finally own one. You just don't see them around here every day, I have always been a fan of the removable roof retracting rear window and the over all open feeling of them. I know every car has its own things to look out for so please chime in if there is something I need to look at or fix. THANKS!

I have NO idea why the pictures came out turned sideways like that so you might have to turn your heads a bit

update,, I managed to find this southern bell about an hour from me for a deal that really couldn't be passed up. She was hit hard in the front (enough that the targa top wont latch) but look at those sex quarters and rockers AND LOOK!! THE ANTENNA HAS NOT BEEN SNAPPED OFF!

The goal here is to cut the entire quarter off and weld it in. Let's Hope. Since this is my work car I always have to have it in a drivable condition hence the slow progress.

haha well the one in the middle of last picture is not mine and the shell I just bought is just that. No motor trans or interior.. Pretty much a few body panels and glass.

Ill throw what's left up in the for sale section so every organ can be sold off before she gets sold to the scraper

yea I noticed that too a little bit. I did the magnet test though and couldn't find anything as far as bondo, or at least not tons. . either way, behind the panels is squeaky clean so its still better than what I have now..

from what I have seen/heard, samba green is incredibly hard to match and in the computer data bases(ppg, standox ,etc) it is not even called samba green anymore. When I was trying to match the color on my dads database a completely different Honda green name came up but it matched perfectly. If there are different formulas by now I'm not surprised one bit.

With it being a pearl color many people struggle with the match.

that red roof is what's left of my lsvtec turbo Da integra. I sold it, and then it changed hands a few times. I was shocked to see my old car in the same driveway as the del sol I was buying two years later. RIP. the built motor was sold and who knows where it went. She is now just a shell. good to know its still somewhat alive and not a beer can yet.

I managed to wheel the shell down the sloped driveway and not smash it into the garage The passenger upper ball joint was snapped in the crash so the knuckle flops around. Moving it is a pain in the ***. I have to jack the front up and push it around ps if you can have a heated garage. DO IT!

got the door off to start drilling out the spot welds and it fell right on my air hose and burst it. So that was a minor set back, now I have a shortened air hose. Couldn't have landed more perfectly.
This spot weld cutting bit sucked and was barely cutting. I think it was dull. I ended up doing kind of a two stage process and just drilled all the way through. Since I'm not using this body I don't need to leave any panel behind where the spot weld is.

started the hole with a drill bit and chased it with this expansion bit.

progress

I Got kind of stuck in this spot on the roof, There is a ton of factory body glue, I made a cut through that then took a break, my body hurt lol.

Its coming along nicely but I have realized this will take a lot of man hours. This is just one of two sides on the first car. Luckily I'm not in a rush and up for the challenge. Its actually kind of relaxing to lock myself in the garage crank the **** out of the stereo and just get after it for a few hours at a time.
