Lug nut key & Rattle sound under valve cover
Hey guys, here with another ordeal. Don't you just hate a oh so tidy person that touches everything and lose it in the process?
Anyway my lug nut key has disappeared somewhere in my garage and I can't find crap down there not mention it's freezing. I'm looking on ebay for a key that fits.
Also I hear this rattling sound when ever give this car gas. it's like a rattle in sync with the compression, but the car runs fine. But it's bugging me.
As for the lug nuts:
I found some similar looking ones but not sure of the size. most of them say M14x1.5 or M12 x 1.5 but I'm not sure what diameter my lug nut is.
Here's a pic of the lug,if anyone can judge the size.

Re: Lug nut key & Rattle sound under valve cover
You guys sure because I'm going crazy already not to mention low on cash.
What makes me skeptical is I held a 14mm hex socket up against the lug and it seem in line. but won't will not fit over. But I'll give the 12 a try.
Do you guys by any chance know the brand. is it Gorilla Tuner lugs or something else. they came on the car so i would't know.
And the rattle knocky noise sounds like this, but i'm not sure i want to trust these youtube comments or title.

Dont know what else you need for the lug size? All 92-00 hondas are m12x1.5...thats the actual size of the stud...
You need a gorilla key or a spline lug key...they are online, at some local auto parts stores...sold at les schwab for $5. Confused why you are holding 14mm sockets up to a lug that isnt hex shaped....you NEED the key
You said in your 1st post the noise is coming from the valve cover...yet you post a vid of rod knock...is the noise coming from the valve cover or the block?

To be honest im not sure where the noise is coming from but to my ears it sounds like on top the engine.
And yes i know the lugs are spline but they have them in both 14 and 12 im just not sure what size my lugs are . the reason i held the socket against it was to get a idea if i need a 14 or 12 spline not to actually pull the lug (with the hex).

Dont know what else to say about the lugs...you know the size, you know what you need to get them off, nuff said really.

If you are desperate and need the lugs off get a socket (disposable)
make sure it is just the same size of the lug and take a dead blow hammer and beat it on the lug.
Then take a impact wrench or large breaker bar and spin the nut off.
you will ruin the nut and probably the socket but it will be off.
You should be able to get all four off if you have four locks.
When you have the nut off, take a screw driver and force the lug out of the socket.

Re: Lug nut key & Rattle sound under valve cover
Dirty I know that procedure but all the lugs are the same it's not a lock nut. It's 16 of these lug nuts. I just gonna have to try both 12 and 14 I guess.

Im so confused....what is 12 and 14?
You have a VERY common lug nut...buy a gorilla key...go to les schwab and buy one...go to autozone and buy one....look online and buy one...did I mention buy a gorilla key?

Re: Lug nut key & Rattle sound under valve cover
The size is in fact M12x1.5
That means the stud is a Metric 12mm thread, 1.5in long I believe. It is NOT the size of the socket that fits. A socket to fit the lug nut you have is a spline key.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/20-LUG-NUTS-...71e05b&vxp=mtr
Does that look correct?

Re: Lug nut key & Rattle sound under valve cover
M12x1.5 means:
12= diameter of the bolt/stud in this case 12mm
1.5= the pitch (distsnce between threads in millimeters)
if there were a 30rdnumber say M12x1.5x30
then the 30 would be length in mm

Re: Lug nut key & Rattle sound under valve cover
Ok so y'all saying that the socket to fit the lug is standard and that the 12 x 1.5 printed on the nut is to specify the stud it fits.
I know my lug nuts is a 7 spline. What scares me is the diameter of the key itself. Can anyone clarify this equation for me.
Is the M12 X 1.5 synced with any key that has 7 grooves like mine.

Yes the 12x1.5 is all thread specs. So there for it should be the same spline key that would fit others too. A socket will then fit onto the lug key.

Re: Lug nut key & Rattle sound under valve cover
Dude...the stud size is m12x1.5...that has nothing to do with the key or socket that will fit on the lug to remove them.
Again...you have a very common lug nut. That style spline lug is going to use the same key as the rest.
Since your so unsure what everyone is telling you, drive to les schwab, ask for a gorillaz/spline key, and say "hey do you mind if I check to see if it fits"...they will say "go for it"...see that it fits (cause it will) pay the $5-$7 bucks and be done.

Re: Lug nut key & Rattle sound under valve cover
Thankfully I found the key in the garage somewhere . But clearly noone truly understood what I was really asking.
Yes the lug nut was M12x1.5 due to stud size but what I was really hoping for was the diameter of the key to fit the lug. To my measurement on my key it's either 0.7 " or 0.8 " and the grooves for each spline was way smaller.
I ended up wasting 15 bucks in the process because:
1. The car is not registered to drive on the road.
2. Someone here told me the spline lugnut keys were standard. So I ended up buying 2 that were M12X1.5 and the diameter was way bigger.
But thank you for your help!!!

Sizes also vary between brands and when they were made. Companies switch up small things so you can simply buy every set and have every key. Defeats the purpose.

Adam what's the point of your input? Clearly it sounds like bashing... But all in all it's over so your commentary wasn't needed.
Civic96 good point you have there. I don't even know who made my lugs because not one major spline brand I look at had something close.
