Loud ticking, Plumes of white smoke... Any suggestions?
My b18c1 is once again causing critical issues that I can't seem to resolve. If anyone remembers, I had fuel issues with the motor running heavily rich, but now I have ran into other problems without even driving the car!
Now, there seems to be a very loud ticking, which existed in the past, but now its extra loud. I have already adjusted the valves so could there be anything else causing the problem?
Finally, it seems that I can always rely on my exhaust to tell me if there is a problem. For 2 years I have looked at the exhaust and seen dark plumes of smoke which was fuel, now I see large plumes of white smoke (most likely oil) coming out the back. I have a head gasket problem (very bad). It leaks all around the head so I am going to break apart the head and try to diagnose the problem.
Please offer things to look for so I know what im looking for. I am disassembling the head this thanksgiving week and weekend so please respond with any help as I could utilize it quickly.
I am located in northwest florida

i would imagine it to be the head gasket causing a lot of the problems... the ticking noise may be due to a lack of oil in the head (maybe because it is getting burned/leaked because of the bad head gasket).

If your taking apart the block to access the head gasket, REPLACE the gasket.
In regards as to what to look for, obviously the head gasket is a start. I'd check out valve sealing on the cylinder head, make sure they are not stuck and look at the seals to make sure they aren't leaking oil as you start up.
If you can, do a leakdown or compression test before you rip the engine apart to see if piston rings are holding compression through their travel during combustion. Check out to see if your oil is milky in texture/looks...it'll indicate that your coolant and oil is mixing. Oh, and oil that burns and manages to go out your exhaust has a BLUE tint to it, not WHITE. White smoke can simply just be your catalytic converter getting rid of things like HCs (hydrocarbons) during warm-up or white smoke can indicate a coolant burn (usually from a poor sealing head gasket). BUT, I'm not familiar with the car itself...
Anyways, hope that gives you a few ideas...basically, if you know that the head gasket is crap, changing it should alleviate many problems for you.

Pulled head off today and seems that there is no foul play. (That I could see). Maybe you guys will be able to notice something funny... Ill post pics tomorrow (Thanksgiving) before I start to clean the block up. I haven't dropped the oil pan yet, only took head off... You guys will finally see what I mean when I say my car is running RICH.... Later folks

Well, I was going to put up pictures, but seems my father has beat me to the punch and went ahead and cleaned all the gunk off... But anyways, still see no sign of oil/coolant mixing in with fuel so I dont know why it was smoking... Also, 2 years of running rich puts a hurting on the motor, so I decided to clean the parts that were accessible which were the bottom of the valves (which were really bad), the piston heads (didnt take them out, just turned crank until it was at very top so no debris would fall in cylinder) and cleaned ports. Also, I dropped the oil pan and tomorrow will take off the sway plate, to look for any foul play in the block... If nothing there, I might just have me one nasty electrical/wiring problem.... Thnx and see ya soon

If I was looking for a rebuild kit for my 1995 b18c1, where would I go to get it... Any places online... I would rather go through a respectable name than going to autozone or something along those lines... Any ideas? Budget limit is 400-500$
Thanks for the help yet again!

If your gonna do a rebuild then you should just get genuine oem parts. I doubt if any other manufacturers know more about the exact tolerance of parts such as bearings and seals than the company who design them. It saves you a lot of headaches later on.

Well, if anyone is still reading this, I have been busy lately with finals for college, but I have managed to find what may be the problem... Worn out piston rings. I ordered a new set of piston rings, and a complete gasket kit for almost everything. Now, I just have to get a honing device and I will start to piece back the motor. Hopefully this will fix my problems... I will keep this thread posted and if you have any questions or comments, feel free...
