Default ...keys stuck in ignition...

my 92 civic(5 speed) has the keys stuck just before the accessory setting. i can push the key in, but it will not turn in either direction, and it will not release the key. the steering wheel is unlocked and turns freely. it ran fine earlier today, so i don't think the key is bent.

i've just spent the last 30 minutes searching for some kind of clue on how to get these keys out, but all the topics are about automatics. please help if you can.

This happened to me a while ago too, but I messed with the steering wheel a bit and finally the sucker let it go. I though it was'nt locked but I guess it was still some how locked. Just turn the wheel and see if that helps.

how did you get it to the dealership? did you just take off the entire silver ignition piece and bring that to the dealership?

What about trying a squirt of graphite into the lock assembly? Good luck!

just an update for anyone else who ends up with this problem...

i got the key out after resorting to twisting the key back to the 'insert' position with pliers. i was wary of this before cause i didn't want to bend the key, but it actually took very little effort with the leverage of the pliers. i simple machines.

after the key was out i lubed it with some skateboard bearing oil(use whatever you got) and just played with the key in the ignition for a good 15 minutes. i'm pretty sure the problem was just a misaligned pin, because after messing with the key/ignition the problem went away.

thanks for everyone's help, it was much appreciated.

Congrats on solving the problem. Check with a locksmith, I believe that graphite is the preferred lubricant in these cases, not oil.

nice, i have seen some cars that you can start even without a key, all you have to do is turn the ignition using the 2 prongs on the side. glad it worked out for you

This happend to me before. Except, my key was able to turn the car on but it wouldn't come out of the ignition. So, I had a fucked key just sitting there. I ended up breaking the key off and having to buy a whole new ignition assembly for close to $500.00 installed! And I could have easily installed the assembly myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone know if you can just go to honda and have them run your vin and then make you a key. The only "black head" key I have left is a copy of an orginal (and not that good of one at that) So I don't want the not 100% correct pattern to keep getting copied

yes they should have your key cut on file with your vin....

However you need to bring proof of ownership...(sometimes)

My old nissan dealer MADE you bring in the little metal tag that they give you with the original set of keys (it has the key code on it)... Otherwise you had to bring the registration and like 3 forms of id... SERIOUS ID... not like license and credit cards... like license passport/birthcertificat and a bill from the registrations address with your name on it...

They took that **** VERY serious... honda dealers (and dealers in general) aren't sticklers like that though.

ASMALLSOL: Honda will make you a new key only if you have the registration to the car along with a valid ID that matches up with the registration.

Hhahaha, you would be suprised to know that Honda will make you a key without a shred of proof except a VIN number... some dealers at least!

yup. my friend has lost his key twice, and both times all the dealer asked for was a vin. it cost him 8 bucks each time.

go to your local locksmith and have them decode the key and cut it back to factory specs, at my shop we charge 12.50 for that but its a brand new key not a duplicate.
wd-40 is the best
