Default keyless remote or door actuator?

ok here's my problem, every now and then when I try to unlock my door using the keyless entry the locks on both doors (driver and passenger) wont come out. Is it my remote or is it the door actuator?
At first I think it's the driver side actuator, but when I think about it, if it's really the actuator then the passenger side should work right? since it's not so now i'm guessing it's the remote?

what do you guys think? I dont wanna spend $90 to get inspected at honda.

sounds like a remote problem. use your other remote and test it. if your doors work by pushing the lever on the inside then it looks to be your remote. try getting a new battery and then resetting the remote then test it.

when i had my '98 i had the same thing, ended up being the battery and the remote. so i just used my other remote till i sold the car.

I only have one remote and I changed the battery two weeks ago.
the doors lock/unlock when I pushed the lever from inside.
So I guess it's not the actuators, do you think by getting a new remote solve the problem?

assuming you did not have power locks before, you should have two actuators, one for each door. it may be that the person who installed them did not tighten them right, and they have come loose, and when you hit the button, the actuator is moving, instead of the lock.

it should. but what you can also do is see if anyone on the boards is close by you that has the same serial number frequency number on the back of the remote and then you can reset their remote to test yours, then buy them lunch for their time?

or you can see if you can get another remote (with same frequency #) on ebay

but looking at it logically, if the doors open and close with the inside switch, and not really good with the remote, and the battery was changed and the remote properly reset ( i assume you know how to reset the remote??) then i would say its the remote.

what you can do is tell the dealership that you do not know how to reset the remote. and a mechanic will come and reset it for you. resetting the remotes is free. they usually do not print out the instructions for customers.

and then the mechanic will test it right then and there. and if it doesnt work you can kinda ask him could it be my remote??? this is what i did to find out if it was my remote or my acuatotors.

well when I change the battery on the remote I did not reset it. I did not know how to reset the remote so if you please tell me how to do it that'll be great. Btw what's the purpose of reseting the remote?
Tomorrow I will go to the dealership and ask them to reset my remote. Are you sure they will do it for free?

yea when ever you change the battery you have to reset the remote or it will not always work. so this could be the problem. let me see if i can find the page in the helms for you that explains how to do it..... also you must have your oem radio aswell, if you do not then the keyless will always be on the fritz... but let me find the page for you...

im not sure where you are but i went to pasadena honda and they did it for free. but let me find you the directions.

when i had my '98 ex, i was very suprise at the valet button location, i didnt even see it. lol

96-98 Civic Models

If you chose to replace the stock oem radio and you want to keep your keyless remote working, you MUST GET A SPECIAL HARNESS to install with your new stereo.

=================================================

99-00 Models:

All EX models had keyless entry standard.
All HX and LX models came withe keyless Entry unit, just no remotes. Just simply program one and your good to go.

Programming Instructions:

Have all remotes for the vehicle on hand.
Make sure all the doors and rear hatch/trunk is closed during programming.
Only need to use 1 remote to get into program mode but all remotes must be programmed during the same session.

Each Step must be completed within 5 seconds.

1. Sit in the car with all doors/trunk tightly closed.
2. Turn the key to the ON position, marked by "II" on the ignition bezel so the dash lights come on, then within 5 seconds press the "Lock" button on the remote for 1 second or so and release the button.
3. Turn the key to the OFF position, marked by "I" on the ignition bezel - dash lights go off.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 three times (a total of 4 times) - each step must be done within 5 seconds of the previous step.
5. Upon the 4th turning of the key to "ON", press the lock button on one remote, the locks will make a cycling sound (clunk), locks will NOT lock or unlock at this point, they will just make a noise. The system is now in PROGRAMMING MODE. Do not turn key off.
6. Within 5 seconds of entering programming mode and within 5 seconds of each other, press the lock button ON EACH remote you are programming, for a seconds or so and release. This step needs to be completed within 10 seconds. Each time a remote button is pushed, the locks should cycle. Up to 3 remotes can be programmed.
7. Turn ignition completely off and remove the key. Step out of car and close door. The Remotes should be programmed and should work. If you have a trunk/hatch release, the button for this feature needs to be held for a few seconds before the trunk/hatch will "pop".

There is really no conflictions when dealing with the 99-00 models as the keyless unit is seperate from the stock oem radio. Installing a new stereo should yield no problems with the keyless.

and i have no idea about any civics after 00

OK i just did it and now the driver side won't lock/unlock at all
when I try to lock/unlock from the lever it just stuck there not moving at all, same thing if I use the remote.
so now i'm thinking it's the actuator.

take off the door panel and see where it gets stuck if you can. you may just need grease?

its kinda similar to the 92-95 inside door locks, the grease runs dry causing the inside lever to get stuck then break off after awhile.

let us know

x2... My passenger door wouldn't lock with the remote or even by pushing the lock inside the car.

Pulled off the door panel & cleaned the gunk off of the nylon pivot point and the guides on the lock rods and applied fresh grease...

Locks & unlocks like new now.
