Key codes - US vs Canada
I'm Canadian & have a US sold Civic. I need to get new keys made as the one I have is really worn (I have to jiggle it a bit to get it to work).
I have the key-code for the locks on the car (obtained from the lock cylinder on the hatch) but my dealer tells me that the lock codes for a US car do not match the Canadian ones and apparently cannot be converted.
Does anybody know what I can do (short of driving more than an hour to get to a US dealer?)
Thanks in advance.

x2, I'm guessing its a 92-95 Civic? And those didn't have immbolizers or anything so just go to a hardware store.

you must really have a shitty dealer, because if for some reason they cant make a copy (which they can the key cut machine is programed, punch in the numbers and it cuts that code) then they can surely order you a key through their own dealership to a united states honda dealership..
eitherway either you didnt go to the dealership or the one you went to really has no clue of what they are doing.

going to hardware store to get a keycut = bad
think about it...his original is sluggish, and the copy is a exact replica...therefore the new one will be sloppy?

Exactly, thanks.
I'd be making a copy of a worn out key so I'd still have the same issues.
I will try another Honda dealer I guess.

As per the Canadian Laws, If you own the vehicle, you should be able to go to a dealership with your Driver's License, Vehicle Registration and they have to give you the key code to your vehicle. You own that code since you bought the vehicle. Your ID must match the Vehicle Registration. You should then be able to have a new key cut for the vehicle provided the ignition switch has never been changed.
