Just cleaned EGR Port for 96 Civic HX - Pics included
I was getting the CEL code 80 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Insufficient Flow so I looked up the guide on here and did it to my civic. Boy was it clogged! It has 132k miles on it. Hopefully it fixes my issues.
Anyway, the pics of the EGR ports and cover for my 96 civic hx.
If anyone has any questions, feel free. Hope the pics help someone.

Its just on the top side of the intake manifold kind of underneath the fuel rail.
I just took off the fuel rail for easy access to clear the ports out, the then sprayed them with carb cleaner.
On the cover, I used brake parts cleaner and a small hole punch in order to scrap all of that crap out of there. It took longer to clean the parts then it did to take it apart.
PS I was getting about 33 mpg with check engine light on, so far no check engine light and I'm at 38.4 mpg.
Well worth the 1hr of my time.

That engine bay looks dirty as all hell. If the outside is any indication to how you care for the rest of the car, your in trouble.

Was there residue around your fuel injectors? Did you have to clear the code or did it clear itself out? Did you scrap off the plate that goes under the cover?

I don't know about that....I have a '97 DX with 167k. Car was wrecked before I bought it. The guys that owned it before me beat it. I swapped the clutch at 162k after driving without it for 3 months. I think in the last 40k I have have changed the oil 4 times. It still gets close to 40mpg and shows no signs of low compression or anything else failing. These things are indestructible!

Should be in the same vicinity.
Just look for the fuel rail and then it's right below it. You have to take off the fuel rail to get to the egr chamber.

Wow, Thank you. Just read your egr cleaning instructions. My 97 HX mt has 265K and still rolls 44mpg. This is first egr code. I will reread and study your instructions, have only done maintenance repairs prior. Thought since rail has to come off, be good time to put in new injectors. I am pricing this repair with a reliable mechanic to serve as motivation, don't want to ruin the black coupe though! Thank you once again for taking the time to post this information.

Unless the injectors are known to be bad, you could also have them serviced. Cheaper than replacement, and can restore like-new performance. They will also be flow tested before and after cleaning, which can let you know if any actually need to be replaced.
One tactic is to send a group of 6 injectors to a service and use the 4 that are the closest match for flow.
