jdm d15b vtec kicking in too hard,, slow before vtec
hey guys im new to this forum. my cousin just got a 99 civic ex that someone has put a jdm d15b in. the car doesnt have any engine lights on and what the problem is, is that the car seems very sluggish until vtec kicks in(it literally jumps when vtec kicks). im thinking its got the wrong ecu or something but i dont know that much about the d series. any insight?? thanks in advance fellas

i dont see how it could be normal, ive watched d15b youtube videos and you can barely hear it crack vtec but this one cracks vtec harder than my buddys f20b so i know something isnt right

No CELs. No problems. Only that you "feel" that it's not right. We're talking about a little 1.5 liter engine. It's S-L-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-W out of the box. There's nothing wrong here. People would PAY you to find out how your VTEC is "cracking" like that. Get a tuneup. Get an oil change. Move on.

which d15b is it? the two stage or just single stage? should have the stock p2p ecu if it's an ex, vtec transition should not be noticeable, should be just a smooth transition from idle to redline

im honestly not sure, but yea it deff is not smooth. it seems sluggish until vtec hits which is at 5500. also seems like it takes forever to hit vtec but once vtec hits its like all the power is there. i know somethings dragging it down before 5500 rpms i just dont know what. i remember reading somewhere that if vtec kicks in very noticable on these that its lacking power before vtec

mmmmmmmmm not quite. if vtec has a noticable crossover it's engaging too early and the cam still has more power to be made out of it.
sounds like the motor you have is an economy vtec engine. check and see if it has two vtec solenoids on it?

cant check for sure cuz the car isnt anywhere near me right now but im 99 percent sure it only has one if i remember correctly. i do know that it does have d15b stamped on the block but its hard to tell whats all really on it because some jackleg did the swap halfass it seems

Check the block stamp, check the head stamp, and check the ECU stamp. Without those three pieces of information, there's nothing we can actually do for you.

I have a D15B with a buddyclub Vcon controller and before i had the vtec controller in there was the 3 stages of vtec in the car so not much of a cross over but after it was installed it kicked in and crossed over like any normal vtec car just not as powerful as a dohc seems to be fine though!

im complaining about it kicking too hard because its slow as all get out before vtec, could care less about even having vtec but it literally feels like its got something wrong with it, next time im with my cousin ill check those three places and i might try to record and upload a video of it cracking and how long it takes to get there so you all can get a better understanding.
