Im Stumped!!!!
OK so my car was running on 2 cylinders and throwing water out the exhaust, so I was thinking Head Gasket right?? So I take the head off and the damn gasket is good. The cylinder head and walls look fine too. What else could have been causing this problem? Could timing have been an issue (originally I was under the impression that my belt had skipped a tooth). By the way, the two cylinders that were not giving me power were adjacent to each other, which originally led me to believe that it was a Head Gasket. The car is an EM1.

Re: Im Stumped!!!! (impr323)
OK heres a little more info....The Crank Pulley bolt snapped in half, so I removed the pulley and replaced the bolt. Then The timing belt somehow became loose, so I took everything apart and noticed that one of the timing guides (washers that go outside of the timing gear) was missing. So I installed one and put everything together, minus the lower timing cover, and it ran fine. So I take the pulley off, to put the cover on, get everything put back together, and thats when the car mysteriously started running like crap. I didnt do a compression test because the car was running fine when I started it the first time. And I tried 2 different stes of plugs too.

Does anyone think it couldve been an ignition problem (maybe it was unburned fuel coming out my exhaust). My car was backfiring when it ran like crap.

Could be ignition: Did the plug wires get switched around?

Re: (gapergurlie_18)
how do you know that the head gasket was fine?
if it just started happening, you will not likely see any discoloration or pitting becase there was not sufficient time for it to do so.
I have seen it a thousand times
what do your plugs look like
and what cylinders was it....#2 and #3
