Default I'm burning a full quart of oil every 600miles!

Hey everyone...

Well my troubles all started a few months ago, when my radiator first sprung a leak. Replaced it, which led to a leaking radiator cap... replaced it, and then my upper radiator hose burst. Replaced it, and then my heater hose burst. All the while, my cap still leaking, even after replacing it with 2 new ones.
SO, I figured my headgasket was blown...

Replaced the headgasket, and everything was great. No more coolant blowing out of every orface... no smoking at all.

Now all of a sudden, i've started noticing blue smoke. I've noticed it a few times backing up... a puff of blue smoke when I rev it a bit. It smokes like crazy at HIGH rpms... most of the time, I can't tell anything. Although, mind you, i've never driven behind the car to really tell; but from the rear view mirror I only notice smoke if I rev it high (which I rarely do).
I've been keeping check on it, have put about 2000miles on the car since the headgasket was replaced. I noticed yesterday, the car was ticking a bit, so I checked the oil, and I was a quart low. It's been 700miles since I last checked the level.

My question is... what's wrong with the motor now??

I had my head deck shaved when I replaced the HG, and they supposedly checked everything, and replaced the *valve seals*? Has new camshaft oil seal. It's not leaking from anywhere.

Is there any way/test I can do, to find out what the problem is?

Thanks everyone!

Thanks for the quick response!

I would say your valve guides are shot causing oil to get into your cylinders and get burned

The leakdown test will tell you where your problem is. The solution is much easier from there on.

Leakdown test posts are in the FAQ.

Good luck, I have the same problem, and need to do the same thing.

Unfortunately when your engine overheats badly enough to blow the head gasket there is untold amounts of damage done to the bottom end too. The same levels of heat that warped the head's deck surface could very easily damaged miled-up rings as well.

I work at a shop and we have stopped doing head gasket jobs on cars with 150,000+ (sometimes less depending on how badly it was overheated) because of situations just like yours. Sure the head gasket is leaking, but now you need an engine anyways. It's hard to cgarge a customer over $1000.00 for a job only to have them need an engine anyways almost immediately when the bottom end starts oil smoking.

Sometimes rebuilding the head with new guides and valvestem seals actually makes the bottom end smoke faster/worse. It sucks man. It's a crappy situation, but it happens a lot unfortunately.

If you did the work yourself then hopefully you didn't dump too much money into the head gasket job.

Yeah... thanks goodness I did it myself. I wasn't sure if I was going to have time to do it so got quotes of $1200+ around here.

I guess i'll look around for a new motor!
