It's not very hard at all. Just make sure everything is at TDC before you go putting the timing belt on.

Pull the valve cover off.
Set TDC, and pull timing belt off cam gear (you will need to loosen belt to do this)
Unbolt intake mani and exhast mani/header
unbolt distributor
drain coolant and remove radiator hoses
make sure everything is unbolted/unplugged from head
take out headbolts from the inside moving out
Pull off the head, check for any signs of warping on both head and block. Replace gasket
If head is warped, you'll need to get it milled.
Clean up head and block, bolt it back together using the torque wrench. Inside moving out, 14lb, 26lb, and finish with 46lb.
Put hoses back on, bolt on intake and exhast mani, bolt on distributor, bolt on valve cover, replug everything, fill coolant back up.
Make sure everything is still at TDC, put on and tighten timing belt.
Recheck everything. Timing will probaby be off, so it will need to be fixed but the car will still be perfectly drivable.

It's really just a matter of pulling everything off the head, removing the head, replacing the head, and putting everything back on.

Just did it recently, took me the good part of a morning.

I think that's much easier

Good lord $1000 to change a head gasket!?!

Costs me $22. (I get a deep discount on parts).

I would be broke if I had to pay that much for each head gasket change. In the last year I've taken the head off 6 times for various reasons. Good thing it only takes me a few hours now.

Which reminds me, I have to change heads on two cars this weekend. That should fun.

Tightening is inside out, loosening is outside in. Loosening isn't as crucial though, as long as they're taken out evenly and in steps.

The torque steps depend on the engine. Mine had to be torqued to 53 ft/lbs with OEM bolts, 60 ft/lbs with ARP's.

Besides those two things, just follow his steps and you'll be fine.

The battery will cost about $200.

Is he going to do the repair work himself, or are you asking how much a shop will charge? If the latter, your best bet is to call a local shop that specialized in imports and see what they quote you.
