Default How much does this cost to fix?

So lets start from the beginning. I just picked up this 92 Civic sedan and i was totally stoked to start modding. This is the first car ive ever owned and **** is already going wrong. so anyways here are some pics from when i got the car, it had a bad distributor but otherwise it was a good find.

Then me and some of my buddies started working on the car, just pulling some parts off to look for rust and replaced the distributor, got it running etc.

AND THENNNN.... i was cruising down the block, and i heard this big WHAMMY!!!!!

This is what i opened the hood to...

What do i do now??? im in serious trouble if i cant get this working i spent my savings on this thing...

Is that the valve cover peeled off to the side there? Is that cam and all still in there? Can you get a closer pic of the engine its self?

Looks like you had an explosion with extreme heat or fire, notice the melted master cylinder container.
But nothing else in the engine bay looks melted.
Doesnt look like the cam is in the head anymore, weird.

i don't understand why everyone is saying "take it back" like it's a defective remanufactured part or something.

The OP bought the car from either a private seller or a used car lot. In either case the car would likely be sold "AS-IS No Warranty." Therefore, no return. Not to mention he bought the car NOT RUNNING in the first place.

A good lesson here is if you are buying a car in NON RUNNING CONDITION make sure you can afford the worst case scenario, which in the OP's case is looking like a new engine.

holy crap.

I would love to see more pics. I've been on here for years, and have NEVER seen a Civic head blow off a valve cover. I've seen broken timing belts break valves, and I've seen blocks blow up from too much boost. I've seen a Civic intentionally run at 7500 rpm with no oil until the engine seized, but I've never seen anything like your picture. I can't for the life of me even think of what would cause that, and I'm very personally curious.

Maybe if a rocker arm went, I could see it punching the VC I guess, but I don't see how that would cause the melted crap.

How much does it cost to fix is a somewhat complicated question. How mechanically inclined are you? If you get lucky, I'd estimate that you could replace the engine for $150. I've seen shops do D-series swaps for under $1K.

Check craigslist and hondamarketplace, and try to find someone selling a d16 engine local to you cheap. If you're mechanically inclined, can rent a hoist and turn a wrench, you and a few friends should be able to swap a D-series in a weekend, even if you're first timers. These are IMO one of the easiest cars to work on ever made.

I would start looking for a new engine. They are pretty common to find and their cake to swap. I can have one of those out and a new one in, in about 3-4 hr if everything goes according.

Most the time I have been able to find D series for around 150-300 from people who were doing swaps or wreaked their car.

Thats why I like those old suckers Its easy to find parts most of the time.

Do you have more information for us, That is definilty weird.

Im curious as to how exactly this happened.

And as stated above. Your best bet is to find another motor and swap it in. and replace the melted parts. And definilty try and figure out what caused such damage.

I have seen this happen before though. I guess I should have chimmed in more. A junk engine we had laying around at the school I went to for the Honda PACT. The Camshaft failed. A defect in the casting cause it to blow up. Engine had a 103k. It blew out the valve cover shot out the back of the cyl head and ruptured the fuel rail causing a fire. It was far more extensive on the fire.

Like everybody is saying lets get some closer pictures of the engine and other areas of the engine.

That actually sounds 100% plausible... unlikely, but plausible.

And pictures of the damage to the hood. Whatever made that hole in the valve cover had to bounce around the engine bay and with the force it came out of the engine, should have left so nice scarring on the hood as well.

the car had to have symptoms before hand. low oil, irregular idle, possible cylinder compression issues or something, engines shouldnt explode.looked like a valve/springs rocketed up through your valve cover or piston dislodged from the crank and caused an explosion cause it couldnt escape. are you able to post any other pictures? this is guaranteed in need of a new block..sound like a build thread to me. go go bank loan

First and only post a ridiculous story with crazy pictures...

Looks like you all just got trolled....

Green wipers in last pic = giveaway. Also notice the feet where the windshield should be.

good catch. didn't even notice that stuff. it does appear that the blown up engine bay pic has a similar color paint as the exterior of the car.. so i dunno. lets see if the guy comes back i guess.

I see it now, the Captiva blue engine bay in the last pic, which doesn't match the blue that the sedans came in as well.
Good catch.

hmmm. dunno...need more pics. the blown valve cover and a normal one does seem like the same valve cover. just look at the peeling paint on the last bolt. its the same peel pattern.

but i cant explain the green wipers and why someone would be on the windshield...?

Yep, this is a hoax. Mods, close the thread.

Note in the last pic, there's no exhaust header, spark plugs, I think the AC is gone, there's no windshield ... somebody is standing where it should be ... multiple different colours of car (yellow on front, green wipers). Did buddy remove or change all this stuff before he took the pic? No. The pattern of rusted bolts by the strut towers is different or absent.
