The other hose is the drain plug. It's at the very bottom of the A/C unit. That one also goes out to the firewall. I'm also installing my A/C this week and hopefully everything goes as planned.

The hose is for condensation to drain out, it doesn't go to another hose. If it's not connected properly the water from the evaporator will drain into your passenger footwell.

I have a 92 Civic EG DX. What are all of the parts I need to install an AC unit to my car?

Things you need:

Compressor - can be found under power steering

Belt w/ tensioner - near compressor

Low side AC hose - Bigger hose connecting compressor to evaporator

High side AC hose - Smaller hose connecting compressor to condensor to drier to evaporator

Drier - Near/next to where you fill up your windshield wipers fluid

Condensor - Next to radiator (condensor is on driver side)

Evaporator w/ theromostat - Behind glove box

Ac wireharness. - Starts from passenger headlight/airbox area, goes between radiator and bumper all the way to driver side headlight.

AC button. - On center console.

First - nice information folks!

Just acquired a '96 Del Sol S without the A/C. It at least looks like Honda left the dash mounted A/C switch behind that dummy panel...wondering about the wiring harness as well - now basically my question...

Will any civic a/c unit work in the Del Sol (again referring to the 1996 model)? - Other than the dryer, looking to hit the salvage yard and get it as close as possible before taking to a pro for the moisture evacuation referenced above.

removing the top is not a cool down option in triple digit weather..., but also do not want to waste time with civic parts that do not fit the del sol...seen the "complete" kit aftermarket offerings for ~ $930 ish - bit expensive (well, alot) - lots of civics racked up by the kids in my area, never any del sols to be found.

Hey all,

Great thread, sure got me to join up.

Here's my thing: trying to put air in my '92 EG hatch. It came with most of the big bits--condenser, evaporator, drier and compressor (apparently not the right one, though--seems to be for a D-series engine and the Civ has a B16A 2nd generation), but none of the little ones--hoses/harnesses/fittings etc. I thought it was the system from the clip the B16 came in, but now I'm thinking maybe not. My mechanic seems to think it's from a different car. They're a bit rough, but not as bad as Electrodudewhatever's (sorry, no offense--just don't want to page back in case I lose this. Again.)

So I have part of an a/c system, but no idea of its provenance or its R12/R134a status, so I'm wondering what's the best way to go. Perhaps I should try to find an entire system from a '93/'94 EG (R143a), the compressor and bracket from a B-series, and go from there.

Or this (and this is what I really need an answer on): I can pick up the entire system from a '94 Integra for 75 bucks--would it fit? Particularly the hoses and harnesses--are they the same length as they would be in a Civic? I know there's a ton of interchangeability between Civics and Integras--does it extend that far?

Any advice/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

And to my fellow Canadian who says we don't care about a/c because it doesn't get hot here: you clearly weren't in Kingston on May 30th of this year, which I'm pretty sure was the hottest day ever, anywhere. Two big problems on my way home from the office: a chunk of asphalt the size of a tennis ball from the newly-paved parking lot which had apparently decided to become part of my left front tire, and an a/c switch that kept turning itself off (this was in my old '95 hatch--R.I.P.) Picked up a heater control panel for 20 bucks and it worked perfectly from that point on. Until my unfortunate incident earlier this month involving a T-intersection, a field and the Ontario Provincial Police. Also the Emergency Room). Even hugging the shoreline of Lake Ontario on the way home, I'm pretty sure I almost died. My wife says I was purple.

So, long story short (bit late for that now, I realize), can I put a/c from an Integra into my Civic?

okay so from what ive read. if you have no a/c (comp, condensor, lines, etc.) you can install either 92-93 r12 setup or 94-95 r134 setup but not mix and match parts. if you already have parts, buy matching parts to the system. right? i currently have no a/c in my 92 hb, came that way, and want to install new system. Can anyone verify if I can install r134 setup in my 92? 92-93 harder to come by.

Yes, you can install a R134a setup on your car. I currently have one on my 93 civic.

I recently installed A/C in my 95 del Sol. This thread was invaluable in the details and suggestions over the few years it has been active. Here's my suggestions for this thread:

1. This link goes to a number of Honda diagrams that will lead you step by step on installing A/C in your cars. http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/.../17204_01.html

2. Take the first few pages and go to your local Honda salvage yard (or treasure chest as like to call them).

3. Get every bolt, bracket, plastic clip, hose, part big and small for your particular model / year shown on the diagrams. Take your time. My son and I went there one Saturday morning when the place opened and spent the next three hours slowly and carefully removing the A/C systems from 4 different cars. Some of the systems may still be charged with Freon. Be freakin' careful; there are lots of sharp edges from torn metal and broken glass. If you see one system you just have to have. Get the yard owner to discharge it; if he sees your serious (and wants to sell) he do just about anything to make some extra off a car he might just have to scrap out. Look particularly for those models with the least about of front end damage. Loosen every connection, do not try to take any part off that doesn't come loose freely. If an engine part is in the way take it off and set assign on the next car beside you. Others will come after to pick the parts from carcass and may appreciate your efforts.

4. While I have a 95 model Sol, I upgraded the evaporator core from one in a 98 model Civic. It has a slot in it for an Air Cabin Filter. The 98 US Civic models got this feature but for some reason were not installed. I looked in the 97 - 01 CRV's and found the cabin filter and holder frame. Incidentally, the CRV's got the same evaporator cores as the Civics and would have fit my Sol as well. While I didn't look, I'd bet the Accords and others got the same parts too.

5. Take extra parts, the most valuable parts are the compressor, condenser, and evaporator cores. The wiring harness and hoses are low price items and since you're buying the complete system, the yard owner will like throw them in for free.

6. Carefully pack the items for the trip home, make sure nothing is denting either cores. Make sure every thing is upright, the compressor holds around 5 oz of bright green oil that makes a real mess. Try to save some of it to lube O rings later, this will save you around 8 bucks when you need it later.

7. When you get home, unpack and light clean each part with a decreasing agent and wipe on some rubber protectorate. Layout each part as it will set in the engine compartment; this will give a good idea how stuff fits together. Test fit parts to make sure they fit easily.

8. Buy new O rings from an auto supply store, They will be around 10 bucks or so. The old ones have been sitting in the sun for who knows how long and will not work nearly as good as new ones.

9. Got a torque wrench? Get one; you'll need one. Harbor Freight sells a 5-80 lb/ft 3/8 inch drive for around $20. Most of the high side fittings are torqued to 7 lb/ft. This like a little more than finger tight, Borrow or buy a set of gauges; you would have to be crazy to do the job any other way.

10. Plan a day (a whole day) to put the system in. The salvage yard owner quipped that it only takes a few hours to take out, but much longer to put in. He knew exactly what he was talking about.

11. Once complete, double check you torque settings. Rent a vacuum pump from Autozone for the incredible sum of $200. Actually, that's the deposit, the rental fee is $0.00. Pull a vacuum on the system. The forum says for 8 hours to boil off residual water vapor (and what ever else is in there). Your time may vary, my son (who is a mechanic) says 30 minutes is just a good.

12. Turn off the vacuum pump and close all valves. Walk away from the system and clean up. Come back in a few hours and see how much vacuum is left. My system leaked to ambient air pressure in 2 hours. Eventually, I admitted defeat due to the fact I had everything torqued and new seals and no special equipment (and lack of knowledge). It takes wisdom to know when you can't go on. I only have to remember things I've done too far and had to spend $$$$$$ for someone else to fix. Oh, if only I stopped a little sooner. Know your limits!

13. Took my newly installed system to a local Auto shop that had been in business in the area for 30+ years. I told them my fears, the suspected leak, the fact that the system was installed from salvage yard parts. It needed oil and freon (what ever h134a is). They had this cool gadget that told them how much oil/freon it needed, leaks, all kinds of stuff. Comparatively, my garage is your average 'do it yourself'. This garage was like technology central. $143 bucks and it was my again.

14. It's been nearly two weeks. Today, it was 102 degrees in the Indianapolis area and my A/C was blasting out at 50 chillin' degrees. The shop told me if it gets hot to bring it back and if there are leaks they will fix them.

I live in the Indianapolis area. My favorite treasure yard is Happy's auto imports off Tibb's on the west side. The guys there only look a little suspicious, They are honest and will sell you at a fair price. I got all my stuff for $200 for the entire system + plus extras. Happy will every now and then get a del Sol in and it will be picked clean in a matter of days. He's got lots of Civics/Integras. A good place to go.

Many parts are interchangeable between years and model. Don't leave the yard with just okay parts, get the best junk.

My total cost to install and charge was right around $350 bucks. I don't count install hours because I like to work on my car. Convertibles are great from 75 to 85 degrees after that you are just roasting in a oven. The A/C will really change your life.

Default Re: How To: Install A/C air conditioning in a 92-95 Civic

Just thought I'd add something I discovered. I have a 92 Civic VX hatchback... I used this guide to obtain and install an R134a system I took from a 94/95 Civic in a salvage yard.

The install was far far easier than I anticipated. While I was calling salvage yards for parts, at least two people all but said "You can't do that!" Hah.

So.... I misread the issue with the AC thermostat located on the evaporator. I knew my Civic had a 2 wire plug and that the Evap I pulled had a 3 wire plug, but I had thought it would work by soldering the 2 vehicles wires to 2 of the 3 thermostat wires of the same color.

After the vehicle was charged and tested, it was found that the thermostat was (of course) preventing the compressor and fan from running on its own. I didn't want to pull the evaporator to place a 92/93 vintage thermostat since I'd have to discharge the system... I began researching the differences between the thermostats.

The 92/93 thermostat is a 2-wire switch. It receives a ground signal as an input and outputs it during normal conditions. When the temp drops too far, the switch trips and doesn't allow the ground to pass through. I'm not exactly sure how it does this as I didn't have one handy.

The 94/95 thermostat is a 3-wire switch. It receives the same ground signal and outputs it the same way. The difference is that it's an electrical sensor (thermistor) as well as an electronic switch (transistor). To function like this, it needs +12v which accounts for the third wire (the black yellow wire).

I happened to pull the blow motor wiring harness from the salvage yard car so I could use the 3 wire connector if needed. When I compared the 92/93 and 94/95 wiring harnesses, it turns out that the third thermostat wire is simply spliced into an existing black/yellow wire within the 94/95 harness itself.

Using the three wire connector I had already cut off the 94/95 hardness, I spliced the black/yellow wire into the existing black/yellow wire on the 92/93 hardness. The thermostat began functioning normally once it received that +12v power on the third wire.

So... point is, a 94/95 AC thermostat can be used in a 92/93 vehicle either by replacing the blower motor harness OR splicing into the black/yellow wire. Of course, why bother if you're able to grab the correct thermostat while the evaporator is already off?

Just thought I'd post this info for anyone else that happened to find themselves in my situation.

rkenshin1,
Thank you, that was a great piece of info!
Can you please top that by telling me (us?) the wire order in the 3 wire connector?
Kudos due!
