The year should be stamped on the head. I think the year stamped may be a year older than the block/motor. My 01 has 00 on the head. On the US motors you can tell by the 10th digit of the VIN on the block.

bump for a good question,
because the head could have been replaced, like if you go to autozone and order a cyclinder head for a gsr (yes they can get them) it will range from years 94-00, whichever one they recieved as a core from a previous customer.

i jdm swap and was wondering how they could tell the year of the motor from a jdm car.

another way to do this would be to look at the vinplate on the bottom of the block.. run the vin on carfax... and this will tell u exactly what car that motor came off of....... passing ref is not easy when you did too many mods..... they check everything including the ECU, gas cap for pressure, timing, the good ol' sniffer.... etc... let us know how things work out

JDM engines don't have VIN plates. It's difficult to come up with the exact year of the motor, aside from the stampings on the head which are most likely correct, but yet, you never know.

when i took my JDM motor to the ref they just took my word for the year of the motor...

I told them 95 but my motor is a 94....i didnt want any trouble cause my ecu was a 95....

a good way to tell them the year is to get a receipt for the motor and have a year on it...

just say everything you bought went with the reciept year......

im sure that because there were only 2 years to get the OBD right for my motor it was not that big of a deal.....meaning that 94 and 95 were both OBDI and the emissions for the two motors are not different....
