Default How do i tell what D series gearbox i have?

im trying to get a gearbox for my D15b7 here in australia

currently i have found 2 gearbox's but i cant figure out what they are from

one is mated to a JDM D15b ... but i dont know if its the original gearbox that came with the engine

the other is from a civic vti - but we dont know if its from a sedan (D16y5) or a coupe (D16y8)

according to this info ... the best 3 gearbox's asside from my stock one are D16z6, D15b and D16y8

http://hondaswap.com/reference-mater...n-specs-29132/

how can i tell exactly what these gearbox's are?

Here is a great reference page complete with gear ratios:

To answer your question there is no real way to tell what gears/tranny you really have from just the tranny code such as S40/S20. According to the link I gave you the S40 might have "K4F" to indicate that it's the better "EX" tranny if you guys even get a model like that.

The best way to tell is a stamp near the differential housing where one of the axles goes in - I forget which side (driver's or passenger's side) but it will have a code stamped:

"B000" - this is a good transmission from an Si/EX/VTi model with closer ratios and the most desirable 4.25FD

"A000" - could be any one of the economy model transmission with taller final drive and longer/taller gear ratios

You can also check for an LSD (limited slip differential) as some countries got factory LSDs in SOHC trannies. to check for an LSD simply look through the diff hole and if you see a diagonal pin it has an open, non-LSD differential. If you can look clear through it with no obstructions/pins then it has an LSD and you NEED that transmission!

Good luck!

Theres one small fly in the ointment here Tom. HX trannys are stamped B000 as well because for reasons unknown honda used a big bearing case. If its a '92 - '95 tranny a B000 stamp is a guarentee (you can identify these by the S20 sticker, and if thats gone you'll notice it doesn't have the 3 12mm bolts for detents.) that its a short geared EX/Si/VTi tranny. If its a '96 - '00 tranny theres still a good chance that its an EX tranny, but it may also have come from an HX/D16Y5.

thats the problem i am having

the gearbox could either be a D16y5 or a D16y8

for some reason honda associate these as being the same gearbox in australia

and the wrecker that has the gearbox doesnt know which engine (sedan or coupe) it came from

and he has a JDM D15b Vtec (EG sedan) but we dont know if its the original gearbox or not

so if the JDM D15b has B000 stamped on it - its a winner?

If its got an S20 stamp and B000 its the one you want.
