How to defeat SMOG in California.
How to defeat SMOG in California.
First mods. Please do not erase this it is completely LEGAL. I have been using this method for quite a few years now.
I am saying this now because I hate this state and its regulations and I am very happy to be moving from it.
1 – California is a state that still allows for car registrations under a Post Office box.
2 – There are regions in this state that are called Change of Owner. Use this link provided by the DMV to find an are that is called “Change of Ownership” Typically look in places that have very little population.
http://smogcheck.ca.gov/pubwebquery/...ZipLookup.aspx
3 – If you live close to these places (mine is a 35 minute drive) you can simple apply for a PO box from the post office of that local town. It will cost you about 78 dollars a year.
4 – If you do not live close to these towns simply set up a UPS store mailbox. I am not too sure about the pricing but they can forward your mail to your house.
5 – After setting up these new addresses you can do as I did and simple go over to your local AAA and switch your cars registration to your new SMOG free until you sell the car. I have 4 cars all are registered to my PO box and have been for around 9 years and not one smog check.
I have been pulled over in my B20 hatch all motor with no cat and 2 ˝ inch exhaust. The cops pulled up my registration and could don’t do a thing because it was completely LEGAL.
Finally I can enjoy my car and all the money I have spent to make it fast, without the 2 year worry of smog checks.
I hope all of you can do this and also enjoy your rides.
Best of luck.

1. When buying a vehicle and setting up a P.O. box this way, you will still need to smog the car for the change of ownership. If you already have the car registered to you, you may not need to for change of address.
2. CARB laws still apply. Doesn't matter what county in California it is, it's still in California and still needs a CARB #. The loophole being you don't have to worry about failing a smog test. Cops still can write you a fix it ticket. Just because smog tests aren't required doesn't mean you don't have to comply with state law.

1 - You are correct the car will have to be smogged to get this to work. You cannot change your address if the cars registration does not have its current stickers.
2 - Actually CARB laws would not apply. They would apply if you then sell the car , at that point the motor and car would have to be CARB and smog legal, as in the saying change of ownership. I have spoken to many people in my research about this. I have friends who work in the legal system, DMV, sheriff and various police departments and all said that if given a fix it ticket just go to court prove that the car is registered in a CoO area and then carry on with your day. I have proof of my last part, I was given a $1500 ticket a few years back for not running a cat, took it to court and then dismissed faster than I could tell the judge the Change of Ownership registration.
But also this thread is called "How to defeat SMOG in California" but also can handle a CARB issue as well
Thank for the response,
