Not True. IF you are idling in hot weather (aka FL) the coolant/water will rush though the radiator too fast for it to be cooled. Your car will overheat if it idles for a long period of time without a thermostat (depends on the cooling system too, AKA if you have a good system, it will take long to over heat BUT it will overheat).
</TD></TR></TABLE>
Both of you are exactly right, the thermostat does more than just help an engine warm up. Like what was said above, without the thermostat in place to control the speed of the coolant flow around the engine block, the coolant won't absorb the heat from the block very well, nor will it dissipate it very well once it hits the radiator. Because of this, the coolant temp will not accurately reflect the engine temperature around the cylinder bores and will be significantly cooler. This gives the driver a false sense of what's happening in the engine when he looks at the temp gauge. The temp gauge reads that the engine temps are normal or below when in actuality the cylinder bores/engine block is considerably hotter than normal. An engine can operate like this for a short time or a long time but in the end it will bake itself by probably blowing a head gasket without ever showing any signs of physically overheating. As far as the cooling system goes, it thinks it's been operating at normal temperatures the whole time and so will the driver.
</TD></TR></TABLE>

And it sounds absolutely viscous when run open.
Does anyone know of some companies that sell fail safe thermostats? If they ever break or what not, they will open up and stay that way to prevent overheating.
Great write-up by the way. You are doing the HID retro fit right? If not........BAN!

Re: (JDMlyfestyle)
good post but i have one question....do you have to drain the coolant to replace the thermostat, or can I get away with doing it without draining?

Re: (MiraiZ)
My car overheated randomly sometimes in heavy traffic, sometimes after giving the car a good thrashing. When it overheated, i noticed the fan does not come on which lead me to believe the thermostat was sometimes stuck closed and therefore the fan switch was not reading the correct water temperature. I took out the thermostat and drilled 3 holes in it and how my heating problems are all gone. But i noticed it takes ages for the car to warm up to normal operating temperature, especially at night. I think i'll just get an OEM thermostat because the one I bought might be cheap and nasty.
So all in all the drilling holes trick with the thermostat is ok but your car takes forever to warm up.

Nice writeup. But 1st 2 pics load quickly while the remaining ones take forever and I don't know why.
