Default Honda recommends 5w-30 oil... are there any exceptions?

i accidently bought some 10w-30 M1 syn. and AFAIK the 10w (is the weight when oil is cold) and the -30 is the weight under normal operating temps or something similar.

can someone please clear this up....

Yeah, there was a couple TSBs put out a while back... They recommend 5w-20 on 1996 and newer civics... So it's really up to you. I don't think 10w-30 will hurt unless you're doing cold starts in near freezing temps....

10w-30 is fine. I used to use that until one night I left my car out and it was like 20 degrees C outside and couldn't get my car to idle on its own.

you will be fine with 10w-30...and yes there is exceptions i.e. ACL calls for 20W-50 with their rod bearings

yeah, i figured the heavier initial weight wouldnt hurt the internals.

however, if honda reccommended 20w and i put some 5W in there might be a problem.....

unless i had ACL rod bearings, which i dont. unless? no

Yes, but since 5W-30 and 10W-30 both perform like a 30 weight at operating temperature, there will be no real difference between the two. The main issue is with cold-start lubrication.

if you live somewhere that is generally a lot colder than most places in the winter, than i would say not to do something heavier. otherwise, it's all good. i just put some 10w-30 in mine, works just fine.

that is a good point... no difference really, only at initial startup.

10w-30 is fine.

****, 15w-50 is fine if you let it warm up long enough.

My dad ran 15w50 YEAR ROUND in his Mercedes 300E. Then when I took it from him after I sold him my Jetta I kept using 15w50 year round. Damn car last 365,000 miles and it still was running fine, I SOLD IT for a few thou after my friend blew the tranny.

In terms of stock cars the variety of oil weighs can range.

I would normally run 5w-30 but I'm running 10w-30 b/c there was nothing else in the shop when I did my oil change

Suppose it really doesn't matter, just g2 make sure it's warmed up b4 blasting off.

No... Honda put out a TSB last year or so recommending using 5w-20 in "all" civics 1996 and newer... In the manual, it states, if 5w-20 is not available, 5w-30 is an acceptable substitute... So it's really up to you what you want to use...

I rather use 5w30 than 5w20. Better in the heat, equal in the cold.

5w-30 for areas with temperatures averaging below 50 degrees.
10w-30 for areas with temperatures averaging above 50 degrees.

Honda recommends using 5w-30 all year round for fuel economy, but says 10w-30 is acceptable if your areas temperature never goes below 20 degrees.

It all depends on your area. I use 10w-30 year round personally because I live in southern california, so it never really goes below 40 in the winter and averages 70-90 tops in the summer.

Just use the factory 5W-30. Yes it will affect gas mileage positively. Why would you use anything else on a (im assuming) internally stock D16Y7/D15B (depening on which CX you own)??
