Default Honda fluids and parts.

I have searched the archives and read nearly all threads on this. I went to my local honda dealer and got some prices for maintenece parts I am going to do.
-new rotors, $91 (set or each, I don't remember what he said)
-new rear shoes, $80 (set or each?)
-brake pads, $63 for a set
-oil fliter, $6.40
-spark plugs, $4.80 each
-spark plug wires, $73 for a set, is this nessisary?
-Moble one 5w-30, $3.50 a quart
-P/S fluid, $4.50 a quart
-MTF, $4 a quart
-coolent, $15 a gallon, premixed I assume
-air fliter, $21.50 I may eather get this, K/N drop in or later on I am thinking about making a pbc pipe "custom" intake pipeing, I have heard people have done this. I might just leave it stock.
-brake fluid, $4 a quart
-lubercation:
-steering grease, they did not have it there...??
-grease with molybdenum disulfide, he suggested a hardware store.
-super high temp urea grease, $20 for a small amount, pricey.
-multipurpose grease, hardware store
-Honda white lithium grease, $6, would any kind work? (hard ware store is much cheaper)
-Silicone grease, $6, would any kind work? (same)

-timing belt, $35
-water pump replacment (if needed, I will inspect), $79 with gasket.

This is my list of all the parts and fluids I will need. I can get the tools needed at a hardware store for the most part, and I have all the basic tools already and a good jack. (sears 3 ton, 2 stands) I have a helms manual where I can get good instruction. is there somewhere else where I can get the exact same fluids and parts somewhere else for cheaper? I know that proparts or somthing like that carries stock oem quality blanks for the front. I forgot to ask the price of a MC, I may need to replace that, my brakes are warped and squishy. All fluids are my first priorty (including bleeding/replacing brake fluid), then getting the brakes up to par. fyi: I got new tires on.

I always check http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com for OEM parts. They are usually cheaper then going to the dealership.

If you have a Napa up there they can usually get you better prices than those. Either that or if you have an Advance Auto parts they might have some of the cheaper.

I could not find the pads to go with the rotors, good price, but I don't know about quality...
handaaccessries.com did not carry anything for 1996, 97+ there, plus the filter is only a few bucks cheaper.

Could anyone answer any of my other questions?

the filters will work for any civic, those filters are better than the honeywell/fram ones you'll find now. The pads I was talking about are the Axxis/PBR ultimate, very good with the brembos.

Should I ask for the s2000 filter over the one made for the 96 HX? that site it good, but most of my stuff is maintenence right now.
What about:
-Honda white lithium grease, $6, would any kind work? (hard ware store is much cheaper)
-Silicone grease, $6, would any kind work? (same)

Pretend that I own a small hardware store (I can get anything free there), should I use thier basic white lithium or is honda's worthwhile to get, same with the silicone grease. Also, when changing the coolent they say to use "Liquid Gasket" to the drain bolt threads and replace the washer (honda only I assume). For replacing the tranny fluid I think it says to do the same thing.

For the brakes, is there anything else I should do besides new rotors/pads/fluid? I was wondering about my rear drum brakes, what do I need to do about the "shoes"?

Just to get this problem out of the way, there is a creaking noise when acceling slightly from a stop. I am missing one bolt from the front bumper, would this be the cause? There is also a sound that is like saying "dum" as high as your voice can when I am braking from 20 mph to a stop, the intervals of "dums" slowing untill they stop and I stop.

Brakes- that price is probably for one rotor only... anything related to brakes, if i were u, i'd go with oem unless u know for sure of any quality brands out there. i.e. SOME brembos

oil filter- i hear u can get some purolator or mobile1 filters for the same price as oem, and sometimes cheaper, and are of a higher quality than oem. i haven't found any places around here, but we also don't have a walmart around here. i just get the k&n filters cheaper through our shop.

plugs- ngk plugs are 1.29 at kragens/checkers/schucks, autozone, pepboysk, etc

wires- oem are the best, lasts forever... ngk's are satisfactory... don't even consider any other brand. "performance" wires are just too expensive if you don't need them

the ONLY fluids u must go with hondas are ps fluid, ATF/MTF fluid, and ... that's about it. castrol gtx is 1.89 a quart at autoparts stores, coolant is usually 8.00 un-mixed, valvoline dot 4 brake fluid is $3 a pint.

greases, u can go with any brand as long as it's an identical grease.

So you are saying that mobil one oil fliters are just as good or better then oem?
ngk plugs are as good as oem? ($5 vs $20 to)

brake fluid, non-honda is ok? The brands are limited at the hardware store (small hardware store) The best one I could find was "Gunk" brand. The manual says to use Honda's DOT3 only, why dot 4?

If the wires are 111k old, should they be replaced?

P/S and MTF I will get from them (or a web site if they carry the exact same thing)

What about coolent? Again, the manual says to use honda's brand.

For oil, I will look for mobil one 5w-30 (not at my hardware store) for a better price then 3.50 @ honda.

I will get most of my lubs from the hardware store, but I may need the urea grease from them. The white lithem was a spray, the hardware store kind is a paste. ???

For air filter, K/N seems to be the best choice right now.

Thats it for basic maintenece. I will search a bit more on what brand pads and rotors would be as good or better quality then oem. I am mostly looking for a pad that does not dust much and is not high performance, just good quality, same with the rotors.

ok... the oem filters are made by the same company that makes frams. there was some cut-up comparison of different types of filters, and let's just say that the fram/oem weren't exactly on the top of the list in terms of the quality of the parts used to make up the filter.

ngk spark plugs are the oem replacement plugs. if u take a look in the owner's manual, it'll even give you the ngk part number along with a nd number.

the plug wires should be replaced, but only as a preventative maintenace measure. they're likely still ok though even if they are the original wires. even ngk wires likely won't last that long.

brake fluid. u just need a brake fluid that at least meets the dot 3 requirements for it's boiling point and lubricating properties. dot 4 brake fluid has a higher boiling point but lower level of lubricating property. now, here's the confusing part. dot 3 brake fluid is a different fluid as dot 4, BUT the valvoline dot 4 brake fluid's properties exceeds dot 3 boiling point without compromising on the lubricating properties. "gunk" is fine also as long as the container was never opened before. some dealers use "gunk" when they run out of their own brands.

coolant... u need a non-silicate type coolant. prestone makes the dex-cool coolant which is non-silicate and is used for alunimun radiators. that's what i used to use.

white lithium grease does come in a paste and in a thick spray...

as far as pads, the raybestos ceramic pads seems to be real good against dusting, very low noise, and seems to last a damn good long time against the crossed drilled and slotted rotors i have on.

is that mobil-1 oil the conv, syn, or part syn?

Mobil one filter, where can I get it?

I saw how it said ngk in the manual for plugs, just making sure.

I'll do the wires with ngk to go with the plugs and they are at least equal to oem as you say.

I feel strange going with non-honda brake fluid, DOT3 gunk it is.

For coolent, I have dexcool, but I have heard it is actually high in silicates, it is orange. Will any brand green coolent be good, or should I use honda premixed kind?

I searched for awhile and found that oem are the best pad for my application and what I am looking for in a pad.

Mobil one, the manual does not say anything about type, it just says 5w-30, what is best?

I also searched for rotors and found that most blanks are the same, even autozone. the general consensus was: cheap rotors, good pads was the way to go. I think I will still get oem quality rotors (online is cheapest) for about 30$ more just for peace of mind over the 22$ autozone kind.

I will call that website tommorow or email them a list of what I need from them. It seems that I can bet most things localy.

When I searched I found out that my mushy brake petal is because of air traped in the lines beacuse of the fluid boiling. bleeding after replacing will help that.

For installing the rotors, can I do it myself and be confident that I have done it correctly, or should I have a trusted local import shop do it?

you could go with AEM pads if you want to go the OEM route.

Here is my list:
mobil one 5w-30, mobil one oil filter or s2000 filter, I have decided that getting honda's brake fluid for 4$ a quart would be worth the small cost, MTF, Honda P/S fluid, ngk plugs and wires (same as oem), I am still undecided on coolent, for $15 I think I will go with Honda to keep everything honda. K/N for an air fliter.
For brake pads, i searched and found that (for $63) oem is the way to go. I will hold off on pads for now, I will have them done when I do the rotors also (myself if possible). Also all the greases that I can get at a hardware store. (honda brands don't matter as much here) Except for the high temp urea grease, I will hold off on that for now, get the basics done first.
What about the distributer cap and rotor? Honda brands? Are those the same as the radiator cap? Should I get that also?
That is it for now. Belt and brakes inspection come next.

-new rotors, $91 (set or each, I don't remember what he said) we use aftermarket at customer discretion
-new rear shoes, $80 (set or each?) honda
-brake pads, $63 for a set honda
-oil fliter, $6.40 honda
-spark plugs, $4.80 each doesnt matter
-spark plug wires, $73 for a set, is this nessisary? honda or NGK blues, honda fits better, NGK blues fit almost perfect but are half that price
-Moble one 5w-30, $3.50 a quart Thats cant be Mobile 1 for that price
-P/S fluid, $4.50 a quart ditch your P/S *****!!
-MTF, $4 a quart honda
-coolent, $15 a gallon, premixed I assume premixed yes
-air fliter, $21.50 I may eather get this, K/N drop in or later on I am thinking about making a pbc pipe "custom" intake pipeing, I have heard people have done this. I might just leave it stock.honda or K&N, aftermarket look good but are usually not oiled and are lower quality
-lubercation: we use non-honda grease for the most part
-timing belt, $35 honda
-water pump replacment (if needed, I will inspect), $79 with gasket.GET IT, honda

my opinions as a honda employee. i get to compare basically anything honda side by side with aftermarket, some parts are good, some aren't.

I will ask about the filter, if it is not made by fram anymore I will get the one made for my car. If not, eather the s2k one or mobil one. If they don't have a drop in K/N replacment at autozone or some place local, I will use the oem one. I am going to autozone right now to check/buy. Anything else to get while I am there?
Another question: In the helms manual it says to replace almost every washer you come up to when you replace the fluid everytime, these are honda only washers right? Also, should I get an oem rad. cap? What is the distributer and rotor?
Thanks guys.

The guy said, "That will be enough to fill up your radiator" Also, in the helms manual (which you should have, if not I have one for sale, im me if you're interested) it says 3.8 quarts I belive, a gal is 4, so I would think it would refill everything.

I picked up a K/N drop in fliter, actually reduced noise compared to the old fram one (I dident put that in). $50, expensive, but it will last forever. Anyway, where would be the cheapest place to get my oil and fliter, ngk plugs and wires? The rest of the stuff I will be getting from honda.

I only use them when I have a big order. On smaller orders you don't really save enough to justify the handling fee, shipping fee, and the wait for the parts. For small orders I go to the dealship and big orders I go to HAP.
