Default *UPDATE* Help. Valve / Timing Belt rattle? Video Included

OK, to start with, my car seems to run perfectly fine. Only complaint I have is this rattle if I'm like idling up to a stop, or shifting into 2nd going through a parking lot at slow speeds or whatever. Next, I'm a complete noob, and only know a tiny bit about engines, and from what I've gathered here most of you can swap engines in a couple hours.

So anyway, I have this rattling noise which sounds like its coming somewhere on the right half of the head someplace. Its only at very low rpms, as you can see in the video, it does it just when I put tension on the throttle and bring the engine up a couple hundred rpms. The engine sounds completely fine at normal rpm. I don't think its a timing belt issue because I had the cover off the other day, and the timing belt looked almost brand new. Anyway, I'm sure there is probably more info you guys need, so check out the video, and I'll provide any further info I can. Thanks for all the help, you guys always come through.

PS its about 18mb (sorry, wanted good sound quality and detail), so you may want to just save it to your hdd first. Especially if alot of you try to view it at the same time.

About the timing belt being too tight, I thought it had an auto tensioner?

AFAIK my tensioner wasn't "auto."

Not too sure what that term means

Check your catalytic converter. If you say the timing belt is like new. That happened to me, i took off the timing belt, and tightened it up, still the noise was there. Did my valve adjustment, the noise was still there. Then i asked a friend and he said it was a vibration (like that guy in the video is saying), then later and later it got louder, and i lifted the car and it was the cat making all that noise, try looking at that, if all else fails.

I'll deffinetly check that, but how could it be the cat when I hear it so good uptop? All good suggestions, and if I get time this week I'm gonna try every one of em. Thanks for all the help fellas, keep the ideas coming.

I have no clue, but thats why i did the valve timing, and timing belt. Cause i heard it up there, i think it raddles thru the headers or something.

First i took off the heat shield, thinking that was it cause of bad molding, but it wasnt. So in a couple weeks im gonna replace the cat, or you could gut it. Theres no way to fix that sadly

Wild guess: Water pump or timing belt tensioner. No I didn't watch the video.

sounds stupid but have you checked the alternator belt? sounds like what mine did when it needed replaced.

take out a can of silicon spray and squirt it around, when the noise goes away you found the area...

I've got a new alternator belt coming....infact I just ordered new belts, timing belt, and water pump from hparts.com. So I'll just change them all anyway.

good video btw, it kinda sounds like an exhaust leak to me maybe around the manifold. does it get any louder goin up hill or anything like that? timing belts change size under heat/rpm and if the car is cold they tend to make some noise on some cars if they're just a bit out of adjustment but sound fine when the car is warm.

a video of you flexing the timing belt without the cover would tell us if its correctly tightened.

OK fellas, here's a little update.....I didn't have much time today, but I did go out and I kinda did the stethoscope method with a 12inch ratchet extender. I held it up to my ear and put it all over the engine, and I think I have it pinpointed to the alternator. Does this make sense? Anybody else have this problem? Relic, I got my parts today so I have a new alternator belt. Is it possible a bearing in the alternator is bad? Cause even if the belt was worn, I dont know why it would make such a sound....I got class tomorrow so it looks like I'll be pissing away my friday night working on my car!

when you go to takje the belt off try starting the motor without the belt on it. alternator belt that is. but it definatly sounds like a bad bearing. and yes it could be coming from a bad bearing in the altenator.
