I might be misinformed, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there was a company in Canada that offers window/part etching with a unique identifier number assigned to the particular vehicle. Then the number is registered with authorities so that in case the car gets stolen and parts turn up for sale, it's easier to track the theives.

As for numbers, they start with the airport code of the city the car was purchased/registered, (so if your car has YUL, I'm assuming it's from Montreal, since the airport code for Montreal is YUL.

Did you buy the car from Canada?

All in all, I don't think it's useful in the U.S.

what year is your car? after like 96 right? i think that was the year honda did that. its for auto theft. basically all parts have the vin so that should your ride be stolen the cops can trace the parts even the windows to a stolen car. honda started this with air bags first in the early to mid 90-s and other manufacturers followed.

maybe your windows are from junk yard cars or something. but when i worked at the dealership i got a write up for losing the sheet with the vins for the windows of a new car. the dealer puts them on but honda supplies them. watch masterminds and youll see how honda started all that back when cars were being broken into for just their air bags. a guy in booklyn started all that and made tons of money selling them back to body shops for like a grand each. back then you couldnt trace a car part to a stolen car. also its a misdomener for just steeling a part off a car. not a felony like steeling the entire car. if the thieves are cought they get a slap on the hand and community service and probation. so they dont tell whos buying the air bags. and they get them out in like 2 minutes and sell em for like 100 bucks to the guy who buys them. the guy selling them had adds in every magazine advertising he had air bags for cheaper than the dealers.so naturally he got alot of business. watch that show and you will see that cops busted the guy after honda put vin numbers on the air bags. then they were able to open a box and see a vin number that matched a car with a stolen air bag report. guy was busted for selling stolen car parts.

Did some searching, and confirmed my explanation was correct...
Does your etching look something like this?

If so, it's done by a company called Sherlock that provide etching/engraving service.
