help with CEL 41 - Primary O2 Sensor (check engine light)
This is a dark day. First time that my beloved civ has given me any trouble in the 6yrs & almost 100k miles that I have had her.
I changed my exhaust about 2 months ago, and changed it again about 1 month ago. Everything seemed fine. I have noticed over the past few weeks that my gas mileage has dropped slightly (about 2-3mpg) after installing the 2nd exhaust.
Yesterday I noticed a strange smell in the car. For lack of a better way to describe it, smelled a little like rotten eggs. I rolled down the windows and the smell went away. Don't know if this is related.
This morning I crank the car to go to work and immediately the CEL comes on. I disconnect/reconnect the battery to reset the ECU. CEL comes right back. I pull the codes and get a CEL 41 - primary O2 sensor. I then reset the ECU again by pulling the 7.5A fuse in the engine bay. CEL comes right back. I have a helms and plan to go through the rest of the troubleshooting this evening.
So, my questions are :
- How crucial is it that I get this fixed? (I plan to fix soon because I have to get my car inspected this month). Just need to know if this has to be done ASAP
- Anything else that I should check/troubleshoot?
- Where can I get a good deal on an O2 sensor?
I am looking at this diagnostic flow chart:
http://www.redpepperracing.com/technical/143/adt
Can anyone explain what they mean by "check for continuity between body ground and HO2S 4P connector terminals no.3 and no.4 individually?"

The primary will KILL your gas mileage man. I might have one lying around you can have, let me check when I get home! Also, don't get a Bosch one..I tried that and it came right back on in like a week or so.

Thanks for the offer, but I went ahead and ordered a new one from http://www.hparts.com today. Should be here by Tues, and I will just swap it out.

It was $155 from http://www.hparts.com . It is $225 at the dealer. http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com has it for $165. However I try to avoid them because they have the slowest shipping in the world. Don't order from them if you need something fast.

I got a multimeter and checked the resistance between pins 3 & 4. Supposed to read 10-30 ohms... I got nothin'. So I'm pretty comfortable with saying that the O2 is dead.

check the part numbers. If they are different, then get the right one for your car.

I fail to see what a passenger passing gas has to do with a CEL. No matter. O2 sensor has been changed and the CEL is gone.

I just replaced my Primary, my code #41 has been on for more than a month. Still got about 29mpg on the stock motor. Took me some time to replace the Sensor since I had to get someone else to remove it. It was nearly "part" of the manifold it was soo rusted.

Re: help with CEL 41 - Primary O2 Sensor (kommon_sense)
Hey guys, just got through code 41 myself!
You deffinately will need a new O2, I haven't heard of any way to get around this other than getting a new O2. Search the classifieds forum, or make your own WTB thread, im sure you will come accross one.
I got mine for $45, the wires were too short so I did a little cutting and splicing and made it work.
My original one was stuck to my manifold so I got my huge adjustable wrench and a 3 foot pipe, and lots of WD40, or PB Blaster. Spary it on there, let it sit for a bit, then come back and hit it with some more and start turning the wrench. Be VERY careful! The O2 is VERY easy to strip!
Once you get it off, put the new one on, disconnect the battery for 5 mins, re-connect, and start her up. Let the car run with the hood open for a good 5-7 mins, keeping an eye out for that pesky CEL. If you do not reset the battery, the CEL will be stay there until your sneakers have kids. The manifold will get hot and will start to smoke from the WD-40 residue, but don't worry, it will all burn off in a few minutes.
The symptoms I was having with my code 41 was a very shitty and low idle, horrible gas mileage, horrible throttle response, and the motor would cut-off at high RPM's. Now, everything is just dandy! (Knock on wood! )

Actually the CEL was causing the bad smell. the smell went away after changing the sensor.

I went the easy route and just bought an oem one. The old one came out with very little trouble. I installed the new one (which even came with anti-seize on the threads already). I pulled the 7.5A fuse for 30secs to reset the ECU. Cranked the car and let it idle for 5 mins. Everything has been fine since then.
