headlight warning?
Should my 1992 Civic LX beep when the headlights are left on and the key removed and/or the door opened?
I ask because it doesn't and also the warning beeper when leaving the key in doesn't consistently work as advertised in the owners manual.
I'm wondering if somebody has screwed with it (before I bought it) or if Honda just didn't think we needed reminding? (My 94 Toyota turns them off automatically if you leave them on and then open the drivers door without the key in the ignition).
(My wife and I have drained the battery a couple of times now, turning the headlights on at dusk (when there is glare but you can't really notice that the dash lights are on) and then leaving them on).

No, on 96+ civics it would beep if you left your headlights on and open the doors when the car is off.
On pre 96 civics there is no buzzer.
I made one for my '95 EX though. It's a real simple method. Get a 12v pezo buzzer from radioshak and some high gauge (20 or so) wire. Then I glued the buzzer to a piece of flat plastic and plugged positive into the low beam's fuse, since that will be powered when the headlight is on, then the negative side of the buzzer, the ground, I plugged into the windshield wiper fuse, since that won't have power when the car is off, it'll ground out and complete the circuit - so it'll buzz if you have your low beams on and turn the car off.
The reason why I connected it to the low beams was b/c I figure if you leave your headlights on, it's not going to be at night, it's going to be during the day, and if they're on during the day, then they're going to be low beams.
I hope that helps you some.
I know my way might sound kinda complex but it took like 10 minutes to put together and you don't even need to solder anything (I only used extra wires to extend the wires coming from the buzzer so I can strap the plastic base to the underside of the metal support under the steering column. It's hidden, and works fine. .

Go to radioshack and get the piezo buzzer with this part number: 273-059. It's a little under $4.
Here's where you attach the 2 wires (worked for me anyways):
Red Wire = 10A Fuse = Instrument Lights/Taillights/Parking Lights
Blk Wire = 20A Fuse = Wiper/Washer System, Moonroof
I put it on 2 weeks ago, and I already had to use it once. It's not irritatingly loud, but it's definitely loud enough to let you know. If Honda were to have put something in from the factory, it'd probably be this loud.

Re: headlight warning? (zanglezonker)
Thanks Syndacate and CivicSpoon.
That's brilliant.
I take it the buzzer doesn't sound when the polarity is reversed, so it doesn't come on when you turn on the wipers but not the headlights?
I'm sure you just saved me a number of jump starts.

GM dealers sell a "headlight warning package" for like $12 bucks, that connects and works exactly the same way as you described (ie the headlight fuse and the wiper fuse).

Re: headlight warning?
I have a 01 Civic Ex Sedan.
The headlights fuse is under the hood and the wiper fuse is under the steering column ... I will have to pull a wire from under the hood to the interior.
Not sure how to pass the wire ??
How do I do this ??
Any help appreciated!!
