I have a 94 H22a and failed smog
CO was like 7% waaaay too high!
HC were like 600 waaay too high!

I'm dumping so much fuel that i can't pass smog.

car is running PERFECT with no code, but smells pretty rich at the muffler.

When I measure voltage for (TPS) throttle position sensor it starts at 4.5volts and as I press the throttle pedal the voltage head down toward .5volts. The manual says it should start at .5 and go up as the throttle is pressed. Is my TPS malfunctioning?

I had engine light #43 come on while it was being smogged but disapeared now for 100 miles!
#43 is fuel supply or oxygen sensor

I have replaced O2 and checked voltage coming and going and is good
I have replaced CTS coolant temp sensor
Timing is at 15 degrees BTDC
all spark plugs are equally sooty

planning on taking is to honda for 190 and hour really dont want to.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

#43 is not oxygen sensor thats why there is a specific code for it

you should check fuel filter , fpr, gas cap , and any hoses that supply or return fuel for holes any tinny pin hole can cause an uneven pressure in the system and cause the #43 code check

Ya I am planning on checking the fuel pressure after the regulator. I also know that when they smog guy checks fuel tank pressure for the cap he I believe pinches a return line or somthing ..so maybe he disturbed somthing he wasnt suppose to.

Ill check the fuel regulator

Its wierd because I barely failed the first day. So I set timing from 17 btdc back to 15 and I welded a cali approved cat on and took it back for the second time and thats when I failed horribly!

So 1,000 dollars later LOL I find a loose connection on the coolant temp sensor! Barely pass emissions on quick test. Then the smog guy smogs me using the other smog meauring technique. I guess for 2 weeks all smog shops or at least the gold shield had to use this different process and I saw great numbers for my HC and CO and NOX!! 93 h22 hatch out and finished.

Was this a BAR test or just a regular under the table smog? How did it come out to 1000 dollars when it was a loose connection of a wire? I have never seen a bad coolant temp causing a 600 on HC. What were all your numbers and your passing numbers?

Ya somthing between the TPS and the coolant temp sensor were throwing a/f off. This was a legit B.A.R. and legit smog. Now that I've done it I can see its really simple if you do it all right the first time. Some krooked smog shop hussled 350 out of me after numerous smogs ..and 320 for a cali approved cat. Then another 370 for the guy that knew what he was doing. I just wanted to find the problem myself so bad that i was willing to give money away for smogs. I believe the signal for the TPS to ECU is suppose to be at .5 idleand 4.5 wot. I was having 4.5 at idle part of the time. So hopefully that was caused by the CTS ugh. Im really just wingin it. If somebody has any other ideas tell me.

This last smog I went in after calibrating the TPS. I was over the limit on hc by about 20 ppm. I left the car for 2 hours and came back and I was passed ..and passed very well after he said "loose connection at coolant temp sensor"
