Default Grinding when I put it in Reverse?

I drive an 00 SiR with 45000kms, when I start my car, (Quite frequently) my car grinds when I put it in Reverse. If it doesnt grind its very hard to put it in Reverse I have to try several times or put it in first gear then reverse and finally it goes. Does anyone know why???

Im thinking of changing to Redline MTL MTF to see if that works, but could there be any serios problems?

Do you have to warm up your tranny before you drive?

Thanks!

I have three honda's and every one of them grinds putting it in reverse. I have asked the same question myself and the overwhelming response that i get is that it is normal, Honda's don't have synchro's in their reverse gear therefore they grind sometimes. Mine do it mostly when it's cold out or just starting up the car, does that sound familiar?

Try changing your fluid, as sugguested.

Also, try putting the car in first gear (without ever letting the clutch out) and then putting it in reverse. It's never grinded when I've done this.

somethimes i cant even get my tranny in reverse, i have to put it in 5th or 1st then put it into reverse. and if that doesnt work i just pretend like i'm giving up, but then I fake my car out with a quick stab into reverse which usually works... i swear my car ***** with me intentionally sometimes... like it will only rattle when i take a girl in it, or when im at a crouded stoplight the revs will start going up and down. i still my baby though, i hope after i swap engines we will never fight again

Reverse is a strsight cut gear, therefore no synchro, thats also why it whines when you back-up, thats what a straight cut gear sounds like. Try this: when you can't put it in gear, put it in neutral and let the clutch out and then push it back in then select reverse, should slip right in. Gets everything moving in unison (<- how to spell that?)

I had the same problem with my ls tranny. I had to drain the oil when i blew my motor. I just got it all working again and I put fresh straight 30w in it and works like a charm. Try to change the oil it is pretty easy and should not take you long at all.

Sounds very familiar, all I gotta say is, what kinda **** is this??? I would not expect this from a Honda. Are all cars like this? I've only driven Honda.

Your 1st gear and reverse use the same internals in your tranny thats why you can do it easily after putting it in first and also the reason it grinds is because your trans fluid is not warm yet. i changed my fluid to honda m-t fluid and i shifted a bit better but still grinded when i started the car and tried to put it in reverse.

I've been told also that this is normal. In my 3g Prelude, it worked beautifully everytime, if I put it in *4th* gear, and then into reverse.

Put it in any gear first, then go to reverse and it should not grind. Most Honda's are like that.

naw dude. You (spoon_ek9) is wrong. The honda reverse is a straight cut gear. There is no reverse gear synco. Thats why is can grind going into reverse (you normally have to put it in 2nd and then into reverse). Ive opened many trannies and its easy to tell.

The only tranny i can think of off the top of my head that has a reverse gear syncro is the 6spd tranny in the camaro Z28...and i think the 2g eclipse GSX has it also (but not the 1gs).

The reverse gear is the gear at the bottom left #6. Notice its a straight cut gear with no syncros! (this is a picture of a 95 SI tranny)

thanks,
liam

Even the owners manual says that only the forward gears are synchronized, and you should put it into a forward gear and be at a complete stop before shifting into reverse. I go 1,2,reverse everytime.

true, the number 6 gear is straight cut gear, right. however, the sleeve set that lock the shaft have synchro. here is a pic

the number 8 gear is 5th gear, the ring on the most far right of number 10 is the synchro of reverse.

Default Re: Grinding when I put it in Reverse?

I sense lots of misinformation in this thread...

1st - Reverse gear has no synchro... think about it, you have to come to a complete stop before you can reverse, so why the hell would you need a synchro? If you're slamming it into gear and jerking the car backwards while it's still rolling forward then STOP IT. That's a horrible thing to do to your drivetrain and your tranny. It takes an extra 2 seconds to completely stop before shifting to reverse.

2nd - It doesn't grind because the tranny fluid is cold, see #1.

3rd - Yes, you can use 10w30 or 10w40 motor oil in honda manual trannies. I've been using straight 10w30 the last two times I changed my tranny fluid, it works fine and I personally feel no difference in shifting between it and honda MTF (which is what my car had in it before).

4th - If you have trouble putting it into reverse, you can do a few things... firstly, don't force it, all you're going to do is make life hard, and probably break your shifter (if it's one of those breakable aluminum ones ). In most cases, a quick push into 1st then back into reverse will solve your problems. If this doesn't work, push the shifter in to reverse (or part way there), and slowly let out the clutch while revving the motor just a tiny amount, it should go right in with minimal complaints. Don't rev too much or let the clutch out too far or it'll grind.
