you would need it placed in the pipe after the header/exhaust manifold. Are you running the car OBD2 or are you using a jumper harness and OBD1 ecu?

if u wanna be legal since ur in cali then go with a magnaflow cat which is LEGAL to have IF you get the California approved cat..the universal type is better since u can have flanges welded on to ur application...if ur gonna run obd2 then get the magnaflow cat for 99-00 SI and if ur gonna run obd1 get a cat thats for the del sol b16a3..that way if u ever need to smog or bar ur car the cat will be LEGAL to have since its for that motor

The EX is the only civic from '96 - '00 that had the cat under the car. I would not recommend trying to fab an in the manifold cat like the DX, CX, LX, and HX models are. That would be a PITA! SO YES ADD IT IN AFTER THE MANIFOLD/HEADER LIKE THE EX MODELS!

Stock B16A exhaust manifold (or B16A specific header) + '96 - '00 EX coupe cat + '96 - '00 EX coupe intermediate pipe + stock '96 - '00 hatchback axle back/muffler = 100% bolt on exhaust.

Go buy a universal one, bring it to a muffler shop, have them cut and weld it in with flanges so you can take if off when you need.
