Default Help I.D. with a head SOHC w/VTEC

I saw this up at Take-A-Part today for a really good deal. It was cold out so I just went ahead and got the head. I wasn't 100% sure with what it is but it looked worth getting. I want to say it is a D16 but I want to know for sure. Also, what are some things I could do with it? I currently have a D15B7 in my EG and I want some more power. I plan on tossing out the whole motor I have in my car now, so some recommendations on a block would be helpful as well.

D16 head. look for VTEC solenoid to see if it is VTEC or not.

edit: just kidding. i see the VTEC solenoid. so you have a d16y8 head.

another edit: compare where the spark plugs are on this head to your d15 head. that's how you can tell the difference between a d15/d16 head

yet another edit: looked at the picture again and the dipstick thing is in the middle. it may be a JDM D16A head. unless it's a d16y8 head on a JDM D16A block.

Look like a D16Z6 SOHC VTEC from Civic 92-95 and Del Sol 93-95.

You can either to a mini-me or go back and take the complete motor, transmission and ECU.

Okay cool that's what I wanted to hear! My B7 block has seen better days and I am just going to get a new one. I'm going to take my time building the motor and just swap the whole thing all at once.

It came out of an EG coupe. It looked like it had been worked on. There were brand stickers and the kid working there said there was an S2 mani on it. There were some aftermarket mounts on too so it may have been swapped at one point.

EDIT: So I did pretty good for an hour of work and $35?

I am going to get this head up to a machine shop first and worry about the block later or even see if they have one there. Which block is best with this head?

Do you have access to the block the head came off of? Z6 or OBD1 ZC bottom end would be best, better crank, stonger rods than a D15B7 etc.

It's still up there. I could probably go up there and get it I just didn't have enough tools and time with me. It was in bad shape though, I am thinking about getting one where the pistons look salvageable. The sleeves looked chewed up too, probably a good half inch of carbon in the cylinders. So the vtec will work with OBD1? I am going to need a computer too probably, the one in the car had already been taken out. Again, the motor I have in my car right now is being retired after I finish building this one.

Yes, that is an OBD1 head btw. From a '94 - '95 car assuming the valve cover is original.

94 coupe. I really liked the way the valve cover came off. Huuuuge improvement from the D1B57 one, it makes it feel like a pop can! The bolt in grommet design is a life saver. I'll get it all organized tomorrow and take a few more just for fun pictures.

btw, just an FYI if you can get that block cheap you could put it in a Y7/Y8 bottom end and build an engine out of that. Same crank, just double the oiling holes in the D16A/D16Z6/ZC cranks. Also Y7 pistons in a Z6 will bump the compression up slightly.

Got the valves and bagged, got the seals off, cleaned a few things up.

i did the same thing yesterday. disassembled my d16y8 head. I will suggest you spray the cam down with wd40 or some kind of lube to keep it from rusting up, then plastic wrap it up. I threw a sheet of tin foil over the plastic wrap for double protection.

There is still a tin layer of oil on it but thanks I will make sure and do just in case. It sure is a neat looking camshaft, is that how all the stock D16 cams look?

The first maybe 1/4in past the seats is pretty smooth before, there is just a ring that I am taking out a little past it. I don't want to do a crazy port job, I just wanna smooth em out. Luckily I have plenty of time to invest on it. The seats are going to get recut but I will be careful anyway.

Looking good

If you lose a retainer when reinstalling retainers and valvesprings hit me up, I lost one when I put in valve seals and just found it yesterday

There was some writing that didn't look stock on the rocker arm cradle too, I'll get a pic of that as well. There are letters on the camshaft, it looks nothing like the D15B7 one, I'll show you that. It just wasn't what I was expecting to pull out. The car seemed semi-built. In the meantime here are some progress pics. One of them is a glass smooth surface, one is ready for the fine polishing, one is untouched, another of the really smooth one.
