friends car got stuck in a puddle??? need some help!!!
hi like the topic says a friend of mines got stuck in a puddle. suposobly never saw it and drove right in the motor shut off. he never tried to start again in the puddle, had the car towed and let it sit. when he tried to start it nothing. so i removed the valve cover and saw water drops mixed with the oil??? the shop told him the crankshaft is stuck and wont move. how hard is that to fix or is the motor done??? would the head and tranny still be good?? thank you for any replies

without having the engine infront of me it's hard to say what the extent of the damage is.
Did the shop give him the diagnosis over the phone or did he take it in?
he might get lucky and just need to pull the plugs, drain the oil, squirt some WD down into the cyls and turn the crank by hand. Fill back with oil, re-install new plugs and drive away.
If it hydrolocked and damaged the rings and/or ringlands he is in for an expensive repair.
the head and tranny would usually still be in good shape if this happens. The tranny definatly

he brought the car in and they tried to turn the crank and said it was stuck. i was going to replace all oil by opening the drain and running cheap oil throught the exposed head to get all the water out. but the shop told him its stuck so i guess no point in doing it... the puddle was pretty deep water went inside his car as well!!!

How deep?
I assume this must have been a BIG puddle.
Tranny should be fine, the engine however...is the oil milky?

no the oil was not milky just a few water drops that i could see...the timing belt had a little bit of moisture on the top right where the valve cover covers it

the water in the oil isn't what i would be worried about.
It's the water that the intake sucks up that will do the expensive damage.

how can i tell what type of water the intake sucked in??? he has a power chamber intake so the filter itself is not exposed. and its not cold air its up behind the light...if the crank is stuck what would that be liek to fix if its even fixable??? thank you

if the crank is stuck chances are it was hydro locked and it damages the cyl's and or pistons/rings
the extent of the damage cannot be determined without a tear down.
If there is no sign that water was sucked in through the A/F i'd want a second opnion from another shop.

if I spent 900 bucks on a D series block it had better be really bad. I'm not familiar with them but i do know that you can buy almost 3 stock D series blocks for that amount of money.
if the a/f was damp chances are it sucked in water. It doesn't take alot to damage the engine. It only takes 1/2 a cup or so to do damage. There is very little room in the combustion chamber of an engine and the water has no where to go so something has to give.

I'd pull the plugs & the valve cover and look for bent valves first, then squirt some mystery oil in the cyls & let sit over night. Worst of all, motor or not, the car will more than likely have a few electrical gremlins in the future from the moisture & corrosion. good luck

Re: (libral00)
The valve won't be bent, the rods will be bent if anything. Pull the plugs and see if it cranks (make sure the battery is good) if it doesn't crank your rods are bent and hitting the block. If you can just replace the rods (if the block is ok) if not you are looking at a whole new short block.
