Default Flapping under the hood (timing belt?) on 98 ex. Help!

Yesterday my car had a little tick under the hood that got louder and harder under acceleration. Changed the oil (it was time anyways) and the ticking sounded quieter, so i thought it was valve lash or something. Then today the knocking got louder while i was driving to work so i thought i should put it in neutral and it died. So i pulled over and sat for a minute. Started it again and the flapping (tapping knocking whatever) started again and sounded like it was coming from the cover. so my mom towed me home with the mini van and 14 foot tow rope. So should I expect timing belt troubles? And would running it like that cause timing to be off?

if the t-belt was bad your motor would be finished. probably rod knock.

Edit: Searched it....

Rod knock sounds like it sucks ***!! I want to check it for that but now I'm afraid to start it. When it first started this morning it was louder then as i drove it was quieter, now its insanely loud. it just started yesterday and this rod thing sounds like it takes time. If it is rod knock i would have to rebuild right?

upon further examination the underside of the valve cover between piston 1 and 2 has some of its black **** knocked off. about a 1.5X1.5 inch spot of bare metal. timing belt looks good for now havent turned it though.

well sorry to say same thing happened to me on my Y8 too. I was told I spun a bearing but not sure. I had done last a last minute oil change and same thing happened but I screwed up because I ran with a LS and as soon as I popped it into 3rd. DING-DING-DING then my car died. I swapped it with another Y8. Your motor is done, but you can rebuild it. I suggest that you just buy another motor and rebuild the blown one. Best choice, by what I say. Rebuilding isn't as fast and easy as you think unless you have money. Anyway good luck. I had the samething with my pistons too, same ones, 1 and 2. I was BLACK, litterally. When i turned the water pump, while the pistons moved up and down I heard a FLUNK, so good luck again!!
