the cable is the same size as the 98, i see no reason why it should be bigger, i double checked it also, turn the heat up and the cable comes forward, and turn the cold up and it comes in all the way. worked just fine.

just about an update... if you can use an entire 99 dash and just change over your 96-98 dash harness that would be best, just because the 99 shell has the right mounting tabs for the 99 climate console.

YES@!! I'm so glad someone finally shed some light on the subject! . Ive been wondering what all had to be done for this swap for quite some time. Awesome write-up and hopefully I'll even have some pics to add to the pile.
Btw, (I may have missed it in an earlier post) but how much do all of the materials for the conversion cost? (such as harnesses, blowers, cores, dash consoles, etc). And do you have to remove the entire dash for this process?

heater core and blower is around $80-100
dash itself would be around $100 im guessing
and climate console i see go for $80
removing the entire dash is just about best for space issues. its not that hard just better using 2 people it is kinda heavy.

my friend just put the 00 center in and relocated the other **** to the bottom by the cupholders needless to say it was mainly for looks for his stereo install but it did the job he used some duct tape to make a fake vent for the air to get inside but you cant really tell

this swap is worth it for no other reason than to finally get a normal double din sized opening in the dash. i love my 96, but i never, in six years of ownership, have seen a clean stereo install in a 96-98 unless it was fiberglassed. with that offset, rounded side it just looks shitty, all recessed and whatnot. i have been so jealous of 99+ for that reason. when i purchased an aftermarket stereo i mounted it down by the cupholders, which was kind of stealthy but a pain in the *** at the same time. when the radios got stolen (both), i replaced the factory radio, wired it to a alpine 6disc changer that i put in the glove box, and left it alone.
back in 98 i had a serious arguement with a parts guy at a dealer because he insisted this swap couldnt be done, and i said it could. ha.
thanks for taking the time, dude. h-t is a slightly better place because of you.

I dont get this part. What is wrong with installing a single din radio? Why would you need fg?
