exhaust leak? header? wtf?
i got a jdm b16a in a 94 dx coupe...dc header, 4" extension piece between downpipe and cat, stock 00 si catback
recently finished swap and cleared all cel's........was running real quick for a few weeks then there was what i suspected as a strange exhaust leak that was killing my vtec powerband little by little. before you knew it my powerband under 5500rpms was better then 5600-8200 and my car made a loud hissing noise from the area around the cat.
when the car is cold or warm if i drive it around it makes a loud hissing noise when i press the accelerator, almost as if the cat is plugged and exhaust gasses are being forced out the flange. theres no hissing noise at idle but once warmed up and the gas is pressed it hisses. going up hill it feels like a dx motor and the hissing gets really bad. hissing gets even louder when vtec hits and car sounds like its got turno and then it starts having this leaning out sound or something toward like 7krpms. the car has a huge dip in power and then it gets really loud during vtec. it must be intake or exhaust related because when i downshift it doesnt hiss when rpms rise to accomodate the gear. it only makes the hissing noise when i press the gas. weird thing is this setup only has 300 miles on it.
thought it could possibly be the clutch but its brand new so i doubt it.
-header flange? possible
-intake manifold gasket? possible
any other ideas? i figure since it only hisses under load it could be a bad gasket on the intake side or a bad connection on the ex side

put your hand over tailpipe with running and seal it , much comming out? lots of pressure? sounds like it is restricted but hard to tell without seeing/hearing it. alot of aftermarket intakes hiss and whistle too.

unbolt your cat, grab a garden hose and a crobar. Run some water through the cat so no harmful dust will get inhaled, then proceed to douch that biatch out with the crobar. Install the new gutted cat and enjoy the restored power.
