Are Engine Swaps Legal in Canada? (Toronto, Ontario)
Hi, new to HT as a member but have been using this wonderful forum for about a year now for references and resources.
My question is, after not being able to find information for about a week of looking through HT forums is that, is it illegal to do engine swaps in Canada, specifically Toronto, Ontario? I think there is something in Toronto where if your car didn't come with it then its illegal to have it. Examples are 4-2-1 headers are apparently illegal because it does something to the heat shield (I'm not very knowledgable on the tech side so please correct me i'll learn from it). Another example is turbos, if your car didn't come with it, then you can't add one on and this is carried over to the Nissan 180's and 240's where people do the sr20DET swaps. This swap would be illegal and have seen people get pulled over and ticketed for it (at the local Tim Hortons). This applying to Hondas, I was curious because if i were to consider an engine swap, would I only be able to swap lets say a civic engine with another civic engine? Please bare with my non tech savy approach as I am still new to this car scene in terms of the tech side.
THANKS!

Re: (M.Bison)
Hmmm i've been down to toronto and I've seen some cars that were done up like exhaust, BOV, etc...stuff thats noticable to the ear i guess you could say. So from my experience, i have seen many tuned cars in toronto so i assume its fine to use aftermarket headers if you wanna put it that way and what not.

as long as the engine that you put into your car is newer htan the model year of your car, you have no wirres....other than that, everything else is up to the officer's discretion.
The Highway traffic Act (HTA) puts a limit on pretty much all mods, so you just ahve to be smart about how you do them. Most, and I do say MOST knowing that there are some jerks out there, cops do not bash car enthusiasts. The only time they get scooped up is when they do stupid sh*t. I know for a fact that a number of Cops here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada also have done up cars. Case in point: One cop I know has an early 70's datsun 240 with a FULLY BUILT twin turbo skyline GTR in it.
Like I said, if you are really concerned with everything being legal, take a look at the HTA and that will help you out immensely.
