ek hatch check engine light code p1298
For a 1996 civic cx. I was told it was an electrical problem. Has anyone else have this problem. Im in desparate need for info because i cant stand the check engine light. Also can this code p 1298 cause for my speedo to malfunction? It hops up and down as it llikes. How about both of my o2 sensors going bad because of this code? This car never had a problems before. I ran it through obd II code reader and i came up with p1298/speed sensor/and both o2 sensors which i dont remember the number.
My question is that have any of you ek owners had this problem before? If so , how did you fix it? Your help is greatly appreciated!

dude I had almost the same problem as you! I just bought a 96 DX hatch 2 weeks ago and I changed out the cluster to have a tach, and as soon as i turn on the car, the CEL came on! Turns out some dick didnt want to fix it so he pulled the bulb to the old cluster but, I digress......
I took it back to where I bought it and they said that the codes were that both o2's were bad, and something about the electrical load detector. They checked the o2's, and they were brand new, so what they are doing is they are sending me a brand new ecu to see if that will fix the problem, they said that they saw rust on the old ecu.
My speedo also has the same prob as you, does it do it a little when you turn on the car? And I would guess that it goes back to normal after a little while. I will post what happens when I put my new ecu in to let you know.

thats exactly what im reading from the obd II reader. Some kind of electricalproblem dealing with the ecu. eld it was. Let me know when u get in a new ecu. And yes the speedo do jump around and rarely do it stay normal. Did your odometer stop working too?? Mine did but starts moving again when the speedo jumps around.
Anyone else having similiar problems. Please help me get rid of this check engine light.

But replacing it is only going to be a temporary fix because you have a wire shorting to ground. If you pull off the brace on the bottom of the intake manifold and look closely towards the top of it you'll see where wires have been rubbing on it. You need to get up under there and tape up the wires and move them out of the way. Oh yea, and replace the fuse.

the fuse is going to blow again and again. you have a grounded out power wire. it is located under the intake manifold. you look under the intake man. youll see 2 service connectors(big *** plugs) there are black and yellow wires on the one connector, all are used to service checks for 12v wires. what happens is that one of the wires are rubbing on the intake manifold barket and is grounding out on the barket(the barket goes from the underside of the intake to the block). after you repair the wire put a new fuse in and your all set. i learned this info from a fellow honda-tech member, and the info has help more then enough. this does happen a lot so check there first before you pull all your hair out. im me if you need help

P.S. how much do you think a brand new 96 ECU will go for here or on ebay?

yo its not the ecu. Its the alternator as someone stated earlier. Damn alternator cost me 110 bux after my 20% discount. I guess it pays a little to work at autozone. ahhaha

i think it is definitely the alternator, i had that prob with my old car, not a honda, but it did the same thing, if you alternator is bad it can do all sorts of weird stuff, like i was going about 10mph and the speedometer said i was running 85mph. that also be causing you to pop up a diff. code. dont think it should have anything to do with the o2 sensors though.
