Default ECT sending unit

i just performed a head gasket change on my 93 hatch and when i was all finished and fired up i was not getting an engine temperature reading on the dash. so i then went and pull out the Engine Coolant Temperature switch and shorted it out with a paper clip and then the radiater fan came on. i was just wondering what else might be stopping me from getting a reading. oh im sorry the motor is a D15B7.

which did you short out with the paperclip? To my understanding the ECT sending unit is located on the thermostat housing (for my GSR that is )There are two sending units on the side of the head, one with one pin and the other with two. The two on the side of the head are the fan switches while the one on the thermostat housing is the temp sending unit.

Close but you have it backwards...

The single wire sender below the distributor is for the temp gauge in the dash, the two pin connector below the dist. is the temp sender for the ECU, and the two pin connector in the thremostat housing is the thermoswitch for the radiator fan.

ahhh thanks for clearing that up! I always got those confused

Also, if you are still reading this 96-EJ6 B18C, would putting a switch in parallel with the switch on the thermo housing also serve as a 'manual override' for the fan to turn on?

I ask because I was observing my turbo timer not keeping the fan on during cooldown, and this would fix it

I have never tried anything like that, but I'm sure it's possible.
