Dyno's don't measure Horsepower, they measure Torque and extrapolate Horsepower from that.
HP = (RPMxTorque)/5252
The gears in your car multiply and divide torque. You want the most direct drive possible, and for -most- cars that is 3rd gear. Its usually a 1:1 ratio, or close too it. Then the dyno calculates wheel torque, divides by final drive, and you get your engine torque. Then it does the horsepower calculation.
