Driveshaft clearance in gearbox!?

Default Driveshaft clearance in gearbox!?

I’ve been visiting Honda-tech for some time, and I’ve read allot of great info!
First of all, sorry if I don’t write this in perfect English.

I swapt a B16A2 into my 94’ EJ Coupé this weekend, all went well except for some problems with a driveshaft. The Right (When I you sit in the car) driveshaft didn’t want to go out of the gearbox, and I didn’t have a crowbar so I disassembled this part: (Don’t know how you call it in Enlgish)

When I tried to take that part out of the gearbox I noticed that it had some clearance, I can move it up and down a few millimetres and while doing that I can hear a slight rattle. I thought that it was ok and assembled the axle.
Now that I’m driving my new engine for a few I day I start hearing a strange noise coming from the front right side of my car, it’s a cracking/rattling sound that only lasts for a few seconds. It doesn’t always make the sound but it mostly happens when turning my steering wheel completely to the right(While driving), when braking hard and taking speed bumps. The first thing that I thought of was the drive shaft, but I can’t find anything wrong whit it except for the clearance that I found.

My question is: is the clearance normal? Can it hurt my gearbox or is it already broken?

why wouldn't you just get or borrow a prybar? you just made your job harder.
you need to replace your axle. the joints on the inside are bad, that is why you hear the clicking noise when you turn.

as far as clearance, if the axle is not completely in the tranny you would be leaking tranny fluid.

have no clue why you disassembled this part.......you have to grab the axle and pull hard as **** to release it there is a small ring that hold the axel in

Yeah I know how to remove the axle, but we couldn't get the shaft out. I had to replace the rubber thing (What do you call it) at the end of the shaft. That's why we didn't want to spend hours on it and just disassembled it. So if anything is wrong whit the gearbox it would have leaked tranny fluid? That's a relief.

The rubber thing is called a "boot" and I think your problem is that you ruptured the CV joint when you took it apart and now it won't remesh properly. You'll have to get a new CV axle from a local parts store to make the issue go away. Good luck.

i had said if the axle is not all the way in then it will leak. if there was something wrong with your gear box then that's something else. in the situation of the gear box it'll only leak if the housing or seals are broken. in your case i doubt your box is bad. just replace your axle the right way and the problem should be gone.

I changed the drive shaft today, but with no luck. The noise is still there
The sound is getting worse now, when I turn my steering wheel while standing still its there, and every time I hit the brakes it there?! Could this be a bad ball joint?

wow, check the all the ball joint, upper, lower and tie rod. look for lose bolts, maybe when putting everything back together you forgot to tighten a bolt.

Problem solved, it was the lower balljoint.!
