Default Does the 98 Civic engine have VTEC? QUICK!

i'm gonna buy a 98 civic ex coupe. i know the ex comes with SOHC VTEC. but when i went to look at the car, the valve cove only said SOHC. has the engine been swapped out?

how do i tell if the engine is the correct one?

i think from like 94-95 some of the valve covers said vtec on them. but i know that they do not have to say vtec. Do what bauley said and look for the solenoid, thats what i do

I figured sohc vtecs have the spark plugs near the exhaust side while non-vtecs had the spark plugs up by the intake side. Are there exceptions to this?
