Default DIY: How not to get your car stolen / Security measures

I'm quite tired of seeing 'omg my car got stolen!' threads, not so much that I'm mad @ the people who got their car stolen but pissed thieves have such a lucrative business going on. So, I've compiled a list of things for you to do to make sure your car doesn't get stolen.

<u><FONT COLOR="blue"><FONT SIZE="3">Security Measures: </u></FONT></FONT>

-1. A pager alarm with all the extras ( Tilt sensor, Glass break sensor, hood pop sensor, alarm backup battery, alarm backup siren )

Having an alarm installed is your first option. Without an alarm a thief can break in to your car and take their sweet time. Some of you wonder why thieves always break in to scrapers.....because they know scrapers have no alarm. Pager alarms have come a long way from when they were first made.

THey used to page you no matter if the alarm actually went off or not, now they not only go off in sync with the car alarm but also show you WHY it's going off. It's a good defeat for thieves who use tow trucks because the second they try to tow, your tilt sensor will go off and send the signal to your alarm.

http://www.vsracing.net/~suspe....html

-2. Stealth Alarm install

Having an alarm that can be disconnected in 1 min isn't much of an alarm, is it?! Take some time or pay some extra money and have your alarm, it's wiring and the siren wiring well hidden.

http://www.vsracing.net/~suspe....html

-3. Misc. car related issues

Things like slimjim proofing your car, rerouting your hood release cable, getting a detachable steering wheel, getting a 'club' of any type, pulling fuses, etc.

http://www.vsracing.net/~suspe....html

-Steering wheel lock- https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1590070

-4. Kill switches.

Kill switches will disable certain necessary parts that your car needs to startup. This will buy time because they will have to find your hidden switches OR push your car.

-5. Viper GPS / LoJack / OnStar

For anyone putting any real type of money into their car ( those of you building their engines ).....realize that you're not ever going to get this money back if your car gets stolen. Now I know how expensive an engine build is.....hell, I'm saving for building my own and it's still expensive with no labor to pay for. I'll be damned if I'm going to spend + $5k & 4 weeks of tearing down my block so I can be out all of that for some idiot.

These things will save your car from whoever got past the first 4 safety measures. It's realtime tracking that, combined with a pager alarm, will notify you in time for you to start tracking the car. If they're smart enough to start removing it, it will display the car's last known location.

http://www.directed.com/security/viper/GPS210V.asp

-6. Other Notables

**Ravelco - http://www.nohotwire.com/ This company seems to have what would be an anti-hotwiring install. It isn't an alarm or a tracking system but they do make it somewhat harder for thieves to steal your car by:

a. Cutting power to all wires so nothing can be read with a voltmeter
b. Wrapping everything in steel loom and making all of their wires black so there's no way to distinguish them

My .02¢: This thing removes the need for a starter kill or kill switches, but I'd still like something audible or something that tracks if you have money in your car. This unit would NOT deter someone from stealing something INSIDE your car, just from trying to hotwire it. Also, this alone would have the same effect of well hidden kill switches + alarm install because you'll frequently hear on H-T how their car was pushed somewhere and then disabled. That's what they'll do with this unit w/o some type of tracking unit.

**Honda-Tech.com Member SuspendedHatch- He's responsible for the website that I linked for the first 3. Great guy who helped me with my Viper 791vx install.

**H-T member Sleepy Red Hatch- Responsible for the link in #3 about the steering column lock.

Nice write-up man.

I'm so glad I live in an area that auto theft really is not a problem much. Knock on wood.

If someone wants your car they will take it. Making posts like this just give them better ideas how to disable anything and steal it.

when I get some extra cash, I'm getting one of these installed. Seems like they have a pretty good record.

You're both wrong. That was the whole point of mentioning both the tilt sensor and the GPS.

How would a post like this make it easier to steal? Thieves already know how.

True, taking precautions and installing layered security most definitely downs the chances of getting your car stolen. Its common sense. Spend 5k+ on your car with no security = you getting flamed for being an idiot. Atleast it'll filter your average joe thug and down.

Here is a good way of not getting your Honda jacked...don't live in California.

That state seems to take about 90% of the car jacking threads on here.

Haha, but if you're sleeping or in the club and your personal bodyguard doesn't 'hold you down!' ( a la Chappelle Show ) then you wont have a chance to use it.

This is more for catching them in the act, which most of us will never do b/c we can't make watching our car a 24/7 job. Nice laser sight though

I like this one, simple, cheap, maybe even more effective than the pedal locks.

i am very interested in the pager alarm with tilt sensor etc. what brand do you reccomend so i can research prices on it?

and should i go lo jack or viper gps. because lo jack is 600 plus 300 for early warning but viper has all that for like 400 but you have to pay every 3 years?

im also thinking about powerlock that disables the starter and stuff.

lastly. what order do you think i should get these at. since im low on money ill be getting them probably seperately at different times. but will have all.

thanks.

Nice write up. As far as I'm concerned evern if it doesn't apply to me I am appreciative of anyone who takes the time to compile something that will be helpful to someone out there...even if it's just ONE person. Good job!

look into the clifford or viper. I use the 50.5x on members cars that want the range. The rsx3.5 is good but lacks the range. You can't go wrong on the compustar units either. Make sure you have a back up battery and a good stealth install too. Now as far as tracking. Having lo-jack and the dei tracking unit is a plus. Remember lo-jack is not gps based. The dei unit is. So with the dei unit you can track the car real time. If you need any more info just post it up.

To Mr. Hatch for the write up. God I don't think I could ever write all of that.
