Re: Differences between D16Z6 and D16Y8?
im a big fan of the Z6, but honestly they are almost identical engines. the Y8 is a little more complicated because its OBDII and the extra sensors that com with that, BUT that makes it more tuneable and you can get mroe information from the engine with OBDII.
my mom has a 93 Si and the Z6 in there is absolutely bulletproof. still low mileage(a lil over 150K) bought it brand new and there hasnt been a single mechanical issue with the engine. changed the valve cover gasket over xmas, valve lash was check at 90K with no adjustment needed, checked again when i was doing the gasket and no adjustment was needed.
i dont see much difference in potential output in the 2 engines. same displacement, VERY similar specs otherwise. and once you start talking about tuning and modding, those differences become more and more insignificant.

Re: Differences between D16Z6 and D16Y8?
I Bought a Used D16y8 To put in my 93 SI that came with a D16z6 from factory, what is needed to get it running? Z6 Distributor wont bolt up, but i cant get it to run with the distributor that came with the y8. I was told i could just drop in the engine and I would be good.
Thanks

Re: Differences between D16Z6 and D16Y8?
z6 has 2 oiling ports on the crank for the rods as the y8 has just one that's why the y8 is more prone to spinning rod bearings. it is a myth about the y8 oil pump not being sufficient with oil. the z6 oil pump has bigger gears in the oil pump so it probably does flow a lil more but ive been running a stock y8 oil pump on my z6 for 2 yrs with no oil pressure problems. the y8 tranny is better because it has steel shift forks as the z6 has aluminum.... get the facts str8....

the y8 dizzy on a z6 head can work, but it's not pretty.

better off using the z6 dizzy and wiring in an obd2 plug. It's what i did when dropping a z6 in my ek. here's a chart type deal i put together. it really is that simple lol.

Re: Differences between D16Z6 and D16Y8?
i currently have a z6 in my car and might be getting a y8 and i was thinking of putting them together in the best possible way first i would like to know if its even possible or would it just be better to keep the z6 together and build the y8?

Re: Differences between D16Z6 and D16Y8?
do NOT forget that the Z6 is lacking in the crank position sensor that are found on OBD2 D series engines. on the OBD1 engines the crank position is in the distributor i believe. im currently encountering this problem because i have an OBD1 engine in an OBD2 vehicle and i want it to be able to pass PA state emissions LEGALLY haha good luck

Can anyone tell me if i can take the D16Z6 out swap heads and use a D16Y8 block in place because my d16z6 has a rod hanging out

Re: Differences between D16Z6 and D16Y8?
I know its an old thread but I figure if I came across it....somebody else will. I recently (in December) completed my first swap ever, with no real direction. I have a 92 civic hatch cx. It came with a d15b7, 5-speed. I was told it was a "just drop it in" kinda job. Not the truth by any means. So long story short....I went from beginner/intermediate mechanic to an intermediate/advanced mechanic from all the research and conversions ive done.
I originally used the block and head from a Y8 and everything else was from the d15. Of course it lacked power but started up with no issues or CEL's. The only thing I had to do was NOT connect the crank sensor.
I did however have to wire the vtec, convert from a one wire to a 4 wire O2 sensor, relocate the iac sensor, convert a plug for a sensor on the fuel rail, but that all came as soon as I put the Y8 intake manifold on. I have since installed headers, and have the Y8 trans which is being cleaned before its install.
By now you should be wondering what the point of all of this is...
Point: I am still using the d15 distributor and have zero issues. Besides what I said I swapped, you can use for the obd1 wiring and no need to convert all that other crap...its just a waste of time.
Hope this cleared up a few things...
