Daughter having problems with 2000 Civic
Yesterday she went out to start it (hasn't been done in a few days) and battery seemed dead. She bought a new one and everything seemed fine for awhile. SHe was driving home and it died at every stop light and turn. It will not idle and dies when in gear. Seems to cycle high and low idle while in park. No A/C.
Help ! She is in Ks I am in Tx, her husband is in Iraq she is 9 mo pregnant !!
Thanks

Where in Kansas does she live? If she lives in Salina, Kansas I would be able to help her. Oh thanks to her husband for being a soldier and good luck with the baby....

Please use the IM (instant message) feature if any adresses or general whereabouts are being discussed.
I have enabled deputydawgg's instant messages, so anyone in her state wishing to help will be able to discuss this in private.
As far as her car goes, has her battery light ever come on? Usually the battery light comes on if the alternator is dying. Also a simple charging system test can usually be performed at her local Auto-Zone store for free.
If it is her alternator I'd highly suggest having a Genuine Honda one installed as opposed to any aftermarket crap. If her Honda one did crap out it's still over 4 years old, which isn't too terrible.
Ask her if when she turns the key into the on position, do any of her dash lights come on fully, or are they dim or totally dead. If her alternator is bad then the lights should not come on since the battery should be drained by now.
If all the lights come on like normal then we might be dealing with an electrical problem, such as the ignition switch "pigtail" or electrical portion, or the ELD (electronic load detector) system.
Let us know as much info as possible on the symptoms.

before replacing the alternator though, you may want to try changing the wires from the alternator to the battery... IF it is a charging problem.. If the wires are bad, that is going to save you a TON of money, as opposed to replacing the alternator.

Its the alternator. I had the same problem and I had to replace the alternator three times.
First of all, do not make my mistake: do not let her get an alternator from AutoZone or any other store that sells cheap rebuild units. Most of them suck. I swapped out two AutoZones in a period of two months because they ended up dying on me. They were cheap, $145 a piece, but after I replaced to of them, I ended up going to a Honda dealership and forking out $250+ for a genuine Honda part. That puppy worked and did not give me any problems.
Secondly, it is easy to replace an alternator yourself. I am sure your daughter won't like the idea of doing it herself, but there must be somebody who will do it for her free of charge, given the fact that her husband is in Iraq (My hat goes off to him). I replaced the first alternator from the first try just by reading a manual for my Honda.

Re: Daughter having problems with 2000 Civic (vitaliy)
Easy? in a 2000 civic?
Youve got to be kidding, the car needs jacked up and tires and arm bars disconnected some to get to it, on a 2000, it is on the bottom of the car in a very tight spot... I friggin dread the day I have to replace mine.... It is a semi easy part swap yes... but you need equipment and time to do it because of location.

You mentioned something about it cycles low and high rpm idle when it is in park? I would check the idle air control valve (IACV) which is located in back of the intake manifold. That module controls your idle... So if, that is busted, replacing it with a genuine honda one might answer all of your problems...

Actually on most of the 96-00 you have to pull out the damn driver's side axle to have enough clearance to get the alternator in and out.
It's not easy for the average Joe.

My friend's 1986 Chevy Monte Carlo has 410k+ on original tranny and motor. No rebuilds.
I'd blame the alternator.

For every one of those stories I hear, I hear 10 more about them taking a **** at less than 60k.
Deloreans are notoriously fickle, but there are documented cases of them going over 500k on the original drivetrain.
In either case, I would keep my AAA card handy.

Because it also provides power to the rest of the car, such as the ignition system.

Can we please not bastardize this man's topic by talking about off-topic BS?

Re: Daughter having problems with 2000 Civic (B18C5-EH2)
definately sounds like the alternator, buuuut tell her to check her fuses as well and see if any of them popped. does her speedometer still work? if not its all on the same wire so if one fails, so does the other.
if a fuse is popped that means a wire is grounding somewhere, best way to check is to shake around stuff and look for a spark.

My guess is the system is not getting the minumum voltage required to run correctly. If the alternator is failing you are either getting less that optimum output or sometimes no output.
I'm with the others who want to thank your son-in-law. If your daughter needs some help paying for an alternator PM me. I'll contribute.
