Default D16Z6 A/C tensioner pulley problems!

So this makes no sense to me. My brother's 93 del Sol Si was making this weird squealing sound at idle. After awhile we figured out the A/C tensioner pulley was missing some kind of spacer behind it, and it was grinding against the tensioner pulley bracket. So I look online and sure enough there is supposed to be a spacer (or "collar") between the bracket and the pulley, as seen in this pic, piece #17, part #38944-P01-000.

So my brother orders the part, comes back next weekend and we put it on. In the meantime he just took off the A/C belt so he could drive the car.

So I take the part and the rest of the pulley parts and start to assemble everything. The parts go over the #19 bolts in this order: collar, pulley, bearing cover, nut, as shown below from left to right:

Now the whole time I'm thinking wow that collar looks big. So anyway, when stacked together it looks like this:

So I install the parts on the car, but what is this? The pulley is wayyyy out of alignment from the crank pulley and the A/C compressor pulley, as you can see:

I am sure I had everything installed the right way. The pulley was on correctly (not backwards) because the #20 nut will only fit into one side of the center bearing on the pulley.

We ended up just sticking a couple of stainless steel washers between the pulley and the bracket, and it seems to work great.

Anybody had experience with this before? It seems like the part shown in the diagram does not work correctly at all on the D16Z6 engine. Would there be any potential problems with just a couple of washers on there?

Mine just fell off from driving with a loose nut. I had to put it back together. That stepped spacer that sits closest to the engine should sink down inside your pulley. Either you need to tap it in, or your pulley is indeed backwards.
