Icon2 D15Z1 Overhaul Question

Hey H-T, I need help to find the best places to source parts that I need to rebuild this motor. This will be my first attempt to do a rebuild so I don't want to make the wrong choices.

Looking to get:

• O2
• Dizzy
• Piston rings
• Valve stem seals
• Crank bearings
• Main bearings
• Water pump
• Timing belt
• Head gasket (since the head will be off for the rebuild)
• Rear main seal
• Front main seal
• Oil Pan gasket
• Valve cover gasket
• Spark plug tube seals
• Distributor o-ring seal
• Camshaft seal
• Belts
• Hoses

Any information will be greatly appreciated and I thank you all in advance.

Thanks for the link though I'm already familiar with them. IMO even if I went that rout I would end up replacing half of whats on my list anyway just to be safe. Honestly it's three things for me...
1: I'm poor folk 2: Availability=cheap (already have a running d15z1) and 3: Learning, it's a perfect/cheap/available platform just to learn how to tear it down and put it back together

I'm aware of the "Great" potential of the Z1 lol but the only goal here is to get her back to the Reliable gas sipping heffer she was ment to be. after that and alot of other work on the car i may save up to toss a simple swap in

Thanks for the reply

I've googled up rebuild kits, I just don't know what places are reputable or if i would be best off hitting up the local pain in the **** part store? And I've found a few good write ups on basic rebuild knowledge, just would like to have a book if I could find one. Thnx

What's this "great potential" in the z1? Its good for one thing and that's fuel economy, I'd get all oem stuff from Honda if your just rebuilding it back to stock.

I'd recomend fjdistributors.com for the majority of your list. But for stock Z1 pistons, honda may be your best bet. -Later, BR

Thanks BrandonR, I checked it out and they do have a good thing goin i think. Sadly nothin listed for a z1, they had d15b and z6 which I'm guessing i could use most of the z6 stuff other than IMG and EMG..

"""Full engine kit of Gaskets and seals
-For 88-00 Honda SOHC d15 and D16 engines.
This kit includes all the Gasket and oil seals your engine needs
from the Oil pan and up the head.
Some of the components of this kit are:

-Oil Pan Gasket
-Valve Cover rubber gasket
-Metal 3 layer Head gasket (.030 thickness)
-Intake Manifold Gasket
-Exhaust Manifold Gasket
-Valve Stem seals
-Valve cover grommets
-All oil rubber seals
-other misc Gaskets"""

this is how it was listed, so I really don't know what they mean by misc gaskets (have to call). Yet still i would come out better this way compared to getting all of it from my local Autozone (which doesn't carry everything i'll need either). I knew somethings for that motor would be tricky to find.

As far as OE options i was able to find this gold mine I'll have to dig through http://https://honda-tech.com/forums....php?t=2059889 (THanks NOFX )

A Few things I'll have to get OEM would be timing belt, HG, Water pump, and Idk bout the pistons yet.
I'm just tryin to get my ducks in a row, have a plan and a fullproof (in theory) shopping list lined up to know what's gonna be spent up front. Like i said it's my first shot at a rebuild so i'm nOObin out of my ears. I don't really have a fricken clue of what the hell I'm doin. All I know is that i've made up my mind to do it and we'll see what happens, YAY!!!

I'll be away from the pc for a few days but would really like to hear from some experianced Z1ers. I mean sometimes since i've had this car I feel like i would have an easier time finding info on how to build a Model T. eh, oh well makes me want to do it even more lol. Thankz for the help.

Helm manual is the best tool, it really is for the noobs as long as you've turned a wrench more than once. Give it a read some time when you're bored. (Yes I've read the helm manual when I was bored :p )

be very careful about local parts stores and the Z1, alot of them say their parts fit, but when you try them, they don't.

You're list looks good to me, but you have forgotten one critical thing about a Z1 rebuild... the O2. Even if the one you have now is good, if it's been a while since you replaced it, I'd recommend a new one for a complete rebuild. The O2 to the P07 (Z1's ECU) is more critical than other hondas of it's age, plus you can keep your existing one for a backup.
Also depending on mileage, the Z1's distributor has the same flaw as other hondas, around 90k the bearing will start to fail.

Pistons would be pointless unless there's scaring or obvious signs of wear on your existing ones. Clean them up and reuse... save money, something the VX is great for.

personally I'd be very careful of the kits, some of them are ok but there are some with very poor materials in them. It may cost more but there is never a problem with OEM honda parts. majestic honda gets my vote.

BTW, nothing to be ashamed of having stock Z1 in my book. They are fantastic at a few things, requiring a downshift to climb anything larger than ant hill, and sipping on the fuel tank till you get bored of driving. Some days I miss my Z1... 195k on the odo and didn't burn a drop of oil, never was apart, original clutch, and it pulled almost 48mpg even at 80-90mph for many hours straight.

Thanks Relic1,

I've been a long time lurker on this site Muwhahahaha j/k. Really, I have appreciated your wisdom on other threads concerning the Z1. It shocking that you don't still have one. I was also expecting a few others to chime in but you did give me solid input. Oh and I fixed my sig for you...It's not that I'm ashamed of the E-stockness or I wouldn't be attempting to restock it lol. I'm very much a proud owner of my lil Bee Eye Tee See Aytch.

I do read the chilton book for fun but have often heard Helms is best ( i hope so) I'll hunt one down very soon. I didn't think about the O2 but the dizzy was kinda on the list, along with ditching the bosch plugs/wires. And I've dealt with the auto store bull utter over the z1 enough already, for that reason i made this thread in hopes to be pointed to the best solution. I've looked at Majestic Honda and it seems to get good reviews here
I can't wait to get this started, it will be so great to be able to trust her to long trip to nowhere.

I do thank you all again for all of your help

I'm sort of wanting one but not wanting one at the same time.
I'm pretty happy with my stock 93 EX for a daily driver since my comute is short... it pulls 30-35mpg in town, even when I'm beating on it... and the AC, moonroof and power windows are difficult to give up.
(no comment about my VX, going from 92hp to 195hp and 10k coilovers means I'm in the 30mpg range and not super comfortable but so much more fun on the track)

send me a PM I may be able to help you out a little.
