Default CYP Sensor (Code 9) AGAIN!!! HELP!!

Hi, my engine is a D16Y7, and has about 85,000 on it. A few months ago, my car started throwing a Code 9, which is the cylinder position sensor. Members said to just replace the whole distributor housing, since the sensor is embedded in there. So I ordered a new distributor from Distributor King, and put it in about 2 weeks ago. Well the other day, I was driving and received another check engine light, and what do you know, it read the same code, Code 9.

WTF is the problem? Can someone help me or give me some suggestions on what to do? Do you think it can happen from running my timing too retarded? HELP!! TIA.

It's possible that too much or too little voltage is getting to it. If it's possible, measure the voltage to and from the CYPS with a good dizzy on your car and another for comparison purposes. It may be so simple as a shorted wire somewhere.

If you unplug the distributor from the main engine harness, put your meter leads across the +/- terminals of a particular sensor and begin to crank the car, it will spit out a voltage waveform by itself. So don't try measuring the voltage to/from the ECU with respect to this sensor (its not even a troubleshooting step). You can also use your meter to make sure that no wire is shorted to ground and has continuity to the ECU (as Kendall mentioned).

If you have an O'scope, click here for known good/bad waveforms to compare to.

What does matter to the ECU is an intelligable waveform - so 'if' this new dizzy is sending out a flaky waveform, you'll get a code.

But you mention that your timing is severly retarded, why? Did you retard your timing recently and this code popped up - any correalation between you retarding your timing and the dizzy spitting this code out?

about a few months ago, i put on a jackson racing supercharger. before that i had no code problems at all. i retarded the timing about 4-5 degree's. after about 1000 miles, i started to throw the CYP sensor code. I was told to replace the dizzy, so i did, and then reset the code, and now I am throwing it again. I am thinking it might be faulty wiring at this point..

How would it be faulty wiring? Have you hacked into that sensors' wires for some reason?

How fast does the code come back with the new dizzy installed?

well with faulty wiring, i was thinking maybe a wire is loose or something.

the code came on about a week after installing the new distributor. i can reset the ECU, and the code will come back on within a week or so again.. same problem as with the old dizzy.

After I swapped my b16a into my 98 civic, I got a code that I thought was 9. I watched it blink 9 times and it was kinda fast. So I automatically thought it was 9. So i was pissed becasue it was a brand new dizzy from HAP. So I tested it and everything tested good. So I looked through all the check engine codes in my helms book, and realized it COULD be 90. So i bought a OBD2 scanner for a $100, becasue I know i'll be able to use it later also. And it was 90, its the Evap system leak in the charcoal canister area. And you said you tryed another dizzy, so it might be 90 instead of 9. I suggest you go get it scanned and get the code just to verify that its a code 9.

ahhhh icic...thanks for the input. that sounds like it might be right. i think my vacuum line going to the evap canister is pinched due to fitment. i'll try to find someone with a obd2 scanner, and verify if that is the problem. THANKS!!!
